16. Dominicans Pan Am Champions and Bethania De La Cruz MVP
LIMA, Peru, August 11, 2019. - Dominican Republic defeated Colombia 3-1 (25-20, 19-25,
27-25, 25-16) winning the Lima 2019 Pan American Games Champion title and Bethania
De La Cruz was named the Most Valuable Player “MVP” on Sunday at the Multisport
Complex El Callao in Lima, Peru.
After a sixteen year drought, Dominicans win the Pan American gold medal for the second
time in the events history (2003) after dominating a surprising Colombia who recovered
from an eight-point deficit (8-16) for an extended overtime third set win 27-25 for the
“Queens of the Caribbean”.
It was a match with little errors for the more than two hours that the four sets lasted;
Dominicans allowed 16 and Colombians handed out 19. Dominican Republic struck even
harder in the fourth set to impose their strategy and force to finish with 64-61 advantage
in kills and 9-5 in blocks. Both teams scored 4 service points.
Outside hitter Brayelin Martinez led Dominican Republic with 24 points including 22 kills.
Three other players scored double-figures for the Pan American Champions, Bethania De
La Cruz (18), Prisilla Rivera (15) and Lisvel Eve (10). Amanda Caneo and Dayana Segovia
tallied 22 points for the silver medalists.

Argentina beat Brazil 3-0 (26-24, 25-20, 25-21) in historic Bronze Medal win. This is the
first time Argentina wins a medal at Pan American Games and the second time they beat
Brazil in straight sets here at Lima Games. Argentina led in attacks 38-32 and scored on 26
opponent errors, while Brazil held advantage in blocks 9-6 and in aces 6-5, scoring on 18
errors from Argentina. Opposite player Lucia Fresco was Argentina´s best scorer with a
match-high of 19 points on 16 kills, 2 blocks and one ace, followed by outside hitter Elina
17. Rodriguez with 12 points on 9 kills and 2 aces. Lorenne Geraldo was Brazil’s only player to
score double-figures with 15 points from 40 attacks, including 10 kills and 4 aces.

19-25, 27-25, 25-16) coronándose campeón de los Juegos Panamericanos Lima 2019 y
Bethania De La Cruz fue nombrada la Jugadora Más Valiosa “MVP” el domingo en el
Polideportivo El Callao en Lima, Perú.
Luego de dieciséis años, las dominicanas ganan su segunda medalla de oro en la historia
de Juegos Panamericanos (2003) luego de dominar a un sorpresivo Colombia que se
recuperó de un déficit de ocho puntos (8-16) en el tercer set para que “Las Reinas del
Caribe” cerraran 27-25.
Fue un juego con pocos errores para las más de dos horas en que se extendieron los
cuatro sets; las dominicanas permitieron 16 y las colombianas entregaron 19. República
Dominicana entró con mayor fuerza en el cuarto set, imponiendo su estrategia y fuerza
para finalizar con una ventaja de 64-61 en ataques y 9-5 en bloqueos. Ambos equipos
anotaron 4 puntos por servicio.
La atacante Brayelin Martínez encabezó a República Dominicana con 24 puntos
incluyendo 22 ataques. Otras tres jugadoras aportaron dígitos-dobles para las campeonas
Panamericanas, Bethania De La Cruz (18), Prisilla Rivera (15) y Lisvel Eve (10). Amanda
Caneo y Dayana Segovia anotaron 22 unidades par alas medallistas de plata.
