Peru is U18 Pan American Champion and Janelly Ceopa MVP DURANGO, Mexico, May 26, 2019.- Peru is the Girls’ U18 Pan American Champion defeating Puerto Rico 3-0 (26-24, 25-16, 25-22) in the title match and Peruvian Janelly Ceopa was elected the Most Valuable Player of the fifth edition of the event that concluded on Sunday at Auditorio del Pueblo of Durango, Mexico. Peru entered the event already qualified to the FIVB World Championship, won their first ever U18 Pan American Cup and first ever medal in the history of the event. For Puerto Rico, this is their second silver medal; they lost to Brazil in 2013. Mexico qualified to FIVB age-group World Championship winning the Girls’ U18 Pan American Bronze medal match to Chile 3-1 (25-21, 25-27, 25-21, 25-15). Guatemala reached both technical time-outs with a comfortable lead (8-4, 16-9) working hard over the net winning the first set by a sizeable 25-17. Honduras recovered from a five-point deficit (6-11) to even the score to 11 in set two, on Guatemalan attack and defense errors; but outside hitter Laura Cortéz along with opposite Jimena Castellanos carried Guatemala to lead 2-0. In set three, Honduras’ attackers struggled to hold off Guatemala’s organized performance that kept on moving forward remaining on top the entire set. Guatemala carried out a well-organized performance leading with huge 40-23 margin in spikes, 5-3 advantage in blocks and committed fewer errors (25-28). Honduras led 4-2 in blocks. Cuba 3, Dominican Republic 2 Cuba won fifth place in five sets 3-2 (25-14, 25-22, 14-25, 21-25, 17-15). Cuba had no resistance from Dominican Republic easily jumping to a 14-6 lead during the first set as the Dominicans lacked energy, allowing Cuba to have a party of points in set one. Set two was different as Dominican Republic improved in spikes and blocks; still Cuba led with a balanced attack between five players to keep their winning campaign 2-0. Dominicans bounced back to win sets three and four relying on Sthefany Gonzalez, Romina Cornelio and Flormarie Heredia forcing a tie-break. Cuban Dayana Martinez was powerful over the net, scoring on solid spikes and monster blocks, key in Cuba’s comeback from a two point deficit (9-11) for a thriller win. Cuba’s unstoppable serves were crucial with impressive 13- 5 margin over Dominican Republic, they also led in kills 51-43 and scored on 40 opponent errors and limiting their own to 27. Dominican prevailed con blocks 13-11. Cuba used a balanced scoring attack with setter Yaimaris Garcia on 16 points including 5 tough aces, outside hitter Thainalien Castillo (16pts), middle blocker Dayana Martinez (14), outside hitter Claudia Tarin (13pts) and setter Thalia Moreno (11pts). Mexico qualifies to its third consecutive FIVB World Championship, winning their second Pan Am medal, they won silver in 2011. Mexico won the first set with calculated moves, remaining focused and keeping Chile under control with Marian Ovalle and Melanie Parra leading the pack. Chile evened the score trailing on a four-point deficit (16-20) to win the set not before losing two set points to Melanie Parra. Chile’s scorers were patient coming from behind (11-16) thru middle blockers Elisa Sandrock and Constanza Silva along with Maria Jesus on the side; but Mexico bounced back 2-1 moving into set four with spectacular 13-5 lead on a combination of attacks and Chilean errors. The home girls held advantage 65-45 in spikes, 9-6 in blocks, a slim 5-4 in aces and scored on 22 opponent errors and committing 29 of their own. Melanie Parra once again led Mexico on a match-high of 26 points on 23 kills and 3 blocks, opposite player Marian Ovalle joined in with 20 points including 18 kills and middle blocker Sofia Maldonado alongside Grecia Ung contributed with 10 points each. In set three Puerto Rico started strong to be on top 10-7 but Peru remained calm and struck back harder to finish with the straight set win. Peru won the title match to Puerto Rico leading 42-34 in spikes and committing fewer errors (18-29). Puerto Rico was superior in blocks 7-4 and in aces by 3-1. Melanie Parra una vez más encabezó a México como la máxima anotadora del juego con 26 puntos a través de 23 ataques y 3 bloqueos, la jugadora opuesta Marian Ovalle acompañó con 20 puntos incluyendo 18 ataques y la central Sofía Maldonado junto a Grecia Ung contribuyeron con 10 puntos cada una. María Jesús Muñoz encabezó a Chile con 14 puntos incluyendo 13 ataques y un punto de saque, seguida por la central Elisa Sandrock también con 14 puntos, la esquina Ignacia Badilla agregó 12 puntos y la central Constanza Silva anotó 10 tantos.
