New York's canals played an important role in the state's development and economy in the early 19th century. Governor DeWitt Clinton spearheaded the Erie Canal project in 1817 to connect the Hudson River with the Great Lakes. The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and transformed New York into a major commercial center by providing a navigable waterway for trade between the Midwest and Eastern seaboard.
