  • Placeholder - presentation title | Date - 6 April, 2006 The top half (blue area) of this chart compares ACTUAL ThinkPad warranty data with the Gartner Notebook industry averages from the previous chart. Also note – these are now CUMULATIVE numbers (as opposed to annual on the previous page). Note 1: Consistent with Gartner publication, the ThinkPad data that has been provided is for products that were manufactured in 2003 and 2004. Note 2: The ThinkPad data includes data for all Platforms. (X,R,T, and Z series) Note 3: The ThinkPad data includes all GEOS, with the exception of AP. AP warranty rates are historically lower, however Lenovo does not track AP in sufficient detail to include in such a detailed analysis. Therefore, if we could include AP, the ThinkPad numbers would be even lower. Note 4: Notice from the previous chart that we have modified the terminology from “failure rate” to “repair action”. This is because the Lenovo data includes ALL warranty claims. However, often warranty claims are filed for cases where no actual hardware defect was found. Therefore, Lenovo feels that our that “repair actions”, as measured by our warranty claim data, is the best measure of Quality as perceived by the customer. While Gartner labels their numbers as “hardware failure rates”, Lenovo will take the generous view and compare these numbers directly to our RA rates. In summary, this may be a worse case comparison from Lenovo perspective, but we assume that in using “hardware failure rate”, Gartner did not intend to mean the literal translation. Note 5: Notice from previous chart that we have switched from annualized to cumulative values. (Thus the Gartner 20% yr1, 23% yr2, and 28% yr3, becomes 3 yr cum = 71%) We took this approach because it is easier to see the total ThinkPad RA reduction and associated cost savings to the customer, from the cum values. The bottom half of the chart (green) compares Gartner averages for current products to current ThinkPads . Note 6: both sets of numbers are given for product Manufactured in years 2005 and 2006. Note 7: For both Gartner and ThinkPad, the “1 Yr Cum RA” is from ACTUAL data. However, 2yr and 3 yr data is a PROJECTION. The projection is necessary because 2 nd yr data on product Manufactured in 2005 does not yet exist. The Gartner projection is from the cited report of June 20, 2006. The ThinkPad projection is consistent with the RA rates that we have used for our Service Cost Estimate (SCE). This is important as the SCE is used to price our products and set overall warranty budgets. In other words, Lenovo bases our business on the accuracy of the SCE – this should give it credibility to our projections. Note 8: Once again, both the Gartner and ThinkPad Cum RA rates are given for Enterprise customers. Note 9: For simplicity, the ThinkPad 2005/2006 rates are given as a composite of all platforms. We expect all ThinkPad platforms to have very similar quality, but have provided the next chart (as a back-up) to be used if it is necessary to provide RA rates for a specific platform. May 2007 Updates: The ThinkPad 2005/2006 2yr Cum RA has been changed from projected to actual (removed *). The 23% value is unchanged as the actual data exactly matched the projection. The ThinkPad 2005/2006 3 yr Cum RA has been changed to 39% from 40%. This is still a projected value but represents greater confidence in the 3 rd year RA as we now have 2 years data on this vintage.
  • With our R61, T61 and X61 notebooks – created the best ThinkPads ever along a number of dimensions: Best-Engineered ThinkPads: Technology and Design: New LCD Top Cover Roll Cage Customer benefits: Most durable ThinkPads ever achieve a 4x reduction in transmitted stress to the LCD; also roll cage design helps deliver the best wireless performance Individualized Battery Control: Technology: BatteryStretch: Individualized, precise power control of Power Manager at component level. • Placeholder - presentation title | Date - 6 April, 2006 The 64GB SSD provides increased performance and a higher degree of reliability, which exceed traditional rotating disk drives. Because there are no moving parts, SSDs are noise-free, produce very little heat and are less susceptible to shocks and vibrations that can be challenging to traditional disk drives.

  • Placeholder - Presentation title | 6 April, 2006 Now let me give you a great recent example about how Lenovo quality . Dell recently introduced a new Latitude notebook that it markets as “rugged:” The New Dell D620/630 ATG claims to meet the Mil-STD 810F specification for ruggedized notebooks. This is true, but only meets four subcategories of this specification. ThinkPad notebooks (14W T61 AND R61) meets 3 out of 4 of the same specifications! And, even after exposure to blowing dust (MIL-STD-810F, Method 510.4, Proc. I) where dust accumulated in between the keyboard, touch pad buttons, and cooling systems and vents, the unmodified ThinkPad T61 booted up after brushing off the dust and bypassing the warning message. In addition, ThinkPad passed two additional tests 1) High Temperature (MIL-STD 810F, Method 501.4) and 2) Temperature Shock (MIL-STD 810F, Method 503.4) And our 14W offerings are much lighter, thinner and almost half the price! How is that for routing the competition on quality? - - - - - - - - Thirty Party Testing showed ThinkPad T61 & R61 passes these tests under MIL-STD 810F 500.4 Low Pressure (Altitude) 507.4 Humidity 514.5 Vibration 501.4 High Temperature 503.4 Temperature Shock - - - - - Rugged and Reliable Quality at no extra cost The ThinkPad T61 is a high-performance business notebook with quality and innovative features common to all Lenovo Notebooks. Features such as the patented active protection system (APS) continuously monitors and self-protects the hard drive from incoming damaging shock and vibration, even if subjected to the harsh environment. The ThinkPad T61 and 14W R61 are also equipped with top and bottom roll cages which provide additional mechanical protection to critical components within the system; and the thermal design enables the system to operate quietly and without overheating even in extreme hot, humid conditions or where large extremes in temperatures and even altitudes may occur. While other OEMs offer special models in order to meet similar requirements - at a considerable premium uplift in price, the ThinkPad T61 meets the stringent MIL-STD 810F test requirements for operational and non-operational vibration, high humidity, altitude, high temperature, and thermal shock at no additional cost or modifications. Even after exposure to blowing dust (MIL-STD-810F, Method 510.4, Proc. I) where dust accumulated in between the keyboard, touch pad buttons, and cooling systems and vents, the unmodified ThinkPad T61 booted up after brushing off the dust and bypassing the warning message. Meets Military Standards (MIL-STD 810F) In independent third party testing, the 14W Lenovo T61 and 14W R61 met MIL-STD 810F standards for vibration (Method 514, Proc I, Cat. 20 & 24), humidity (Method 507.4), Altitude (Method 500.4 Low Pressure, Proc. I; Operational up to 10k feet), High Temperature (Method 501.4, standard) and Thermal Shock (Method 503.4).
