Scavenger Hunt Ivan Jurkovic

 1. 1. Classifying Matter Scavenger Hunt
Ivan Jurkovic
Period 8
2. 2. Element – Copper (Cu)
This copper wire is an element because it is a substance that cannot be decomposed into simpler substances by chemical means. This is the most pure form of this object.
3. 3. Compound - Water
This is a compound because it consists of two different elements that have chemically combined to form a completely new substance which has entirely different properties to those of the elements of its make up. Two molecules of Hydrogen Gas, which is explosive, + 1 molecule of Oxygen gas, which fuels fire, has chemically combined to form water, a liquid that puts fires out. As you can see, a completely new substance was formed that has new properties.
4. 4. Compound - Salt
This is a compound because it consists of two different elements that have chemically combined to form a completely new substance which has entirely different properties to those of the elements of its make up. Sodium (Na) + Chlorine (Cl) are two different elements that combine chemically to form Sodium Chloride (NaCl), more commonly known as table salt.
5. 5. Heterogeneous Mixture:Granite
What makes granite a heterogeneous mixture is that it is made up of many minerals such as feldspar, biotite, mica and quartz so it doesn’t have the same composition and properties throughout.
It also contains more than one pure substance.
6. 6. Heterogeneous Mixture:Pizza
Pizza is a heterogeneous mixture because it is not composed
of the same materials throughout the whole thing. Also, it is
made up of more than one pure substance.
7. 7. Homogenous Mixture:Milk
Milk is a mixture which is includes uniform materials throughout its composition.
Each serving of milk will have the same things in it constantly, which makes it
homogenized.
8. 8. Homogeneous Mixture:Window Cleaner
All the chemicals in this window cleaner have fused together into one liquid,
and as a result they can’t be separated unless it is done by chemical means. That
is why the window cleaner is classified as a homogeneous mixture.
9. 9. Mixture – Orange Juice w/ Pulp
This orange juice with pulp is an example of a mixture because
it has two separate substances in it that can be separated without having
to do it chemically. The two substances (juice and pulp) are mixed together,
making this a mixture.
10. 10. Mixture – Cranberry Mix
This cranberry trail mix is a mixture because it is composed of more than one substance. All of the substances retain their identity and properties.
