3. Introduction
• It is a separate radio system designed to
supplement existing broadband internet
system
• WMAN is an outdoor, point-to-point wireless
LAN that can provide coverage to a
city, campus, or suburban areas
• Subscribers to WiMAX use either a wired LAN
or Wi-Fi for communication
3
6. WiMAX network components
there are mainly 3 components
• WiMAX base station:
It is the tower with large coverage area of 6 miles
radius from it.
It is also called as Access service network(ASN)
WiMAX would use MAC layer defined in standard
for communication
6
7. WiMAX network components
• WiMAX receiver
It may have a separate antenna or an interface
card sitting on a device
It is also referred as customer premise equipment
(CPE).
BS-sectored/directional or Omni directional
fixed SS-directional
mobile SS- Omni directional
7
8. WiMAX network components
• Backhaul
It refers to the connection from access point to
the BS and BS to the core network.
WiMAX tower may be directly connected to
internet or may be connected through another
WiMAX tower.
By using high speed microwave backhaul links it
would allow roaming as in cell phones.

10. Features of WiMAX
• Flexible architecture:
Supports several s/m architectures like P2P,
P2MP, and ubiquitous coverage.
• High security:
Supports Advanced Encryption Standard(AES)
And Triple Data Encryption Standard(TDES)
• WiMAX QoS:
It can be dynamically optimised for the mix of
traffic that is being carried
10
11. Features of WiMAX
• Quick deployment
Unlike wired solutions needs very less time to
provide access to end users in hours
• Multilevel service
Service will b as per the agreement between
service provider and end user. Service can be
same or different for users in the same SS
• Interoperability
WiMAX is based on international, vendor neutral
standards can be used at different locations and
with different SPs
11
12. Features of WiMAX
• Portability
Once the SS is powered up, characterises itself
with BS and communicates accordingly
• Mobility
Improvements made in OFDM PHY layers to support
devices and services in mobile environment
• Cost-effective
as it is open and adopted international standard
enables mass production of chipsets
• Wider coverage
Equipped with high power amplifier even in
low level modulation it covers a large area
12
13. Features of WiMAX
• NLOS operation
WiMAX is based on OFDM technology which has
inherent capability of handling NLOS
environments and offers broad bandwidth
• High capacity
Using higher modulation(64 QAM) and higher
channel bandwidth can provide seam less service
for end users
13
14. WiMAX mobility support
• WiMAX, IEEE 802.16e-2005 envisions 4
mobility related usage scenarios
Nomadic
Portable
Simple mobility-60 km/h
Full mobility-120 km/h
