2. Genre
In this music video Weezer follow a very popular
trend of the band appearing through all the shots
and very rarely not appearing as the band is the
main selling point in rock bands and the focus of
music videos as a whole as iconic band members
prove popular with fans and some could say they
care more about the music itself in some cases.
The band also has the lyrics they sing follow into the
narrative which also reference the 50’s namesake
actress Mary Tyler Moore with the music video
heavily referencing popular 70’s show ‘Happy Days’
so you can see there is a lot if intertextuality to
other people’s work which can help bring people
from a different audience into watching your video,
in this case the singer is singing to a girl as if singing
about her whilst being part of the narrative and
throughout the video people are seen mimicking
what the singer is saying with their own lips.
3. Narrative
The Narrative follows a linear structure which is organized quite well so you don’t get
bored at all during the four minutes this song is playing and follows the band playing
in the setting which is a very popular 70’s show called ‘Happy Days’ with a very jolly
and upbeat theme attached to it with a care-free vibe like much bands perform in
their videos as not all songs released by rock bands have meanings.
There are a lot of matching actions to the beat of the songs such as the large amount
of people dancing to the music and occasionally the singer matching the narration
with flirting with girls.
4. Audience
I think the main target audience for this song is teenagers and young adults as this is a
very modern styled song however I think they had a secondary target audience,
reaching out to an older audience as it has references and intertextuality with stuff
released in the 70’s.
As far as gender goes, it’s very much suitable for both in terms of what you’re seeing
however there a lot of scenes of romance and flirtatious heterosexual behaviour for
both genders as girls give the band members a good look and a confident, black jacket
dude comes in and leaves with two women at his side which is showing appeal for
both genders being able to put themselves in their situation for wanting to attract
someone.
5. Representation
The representation shown to the audience through the video is very much how
different romance in the 70’s is in comparison to modern day, showing it to be very
fun loving and happy in nature however it is very stereotypical being adapted from a
70’s show called ‘Happy Days’ and doesn’t show how people really act which you can
tell by the performance given which is very much deliberately over the top.
The star image is very much present in their video from the sheer amount of screen
time the band have onscreen in comparison to the other characters presented on this
video.
There is a lot of male gazing actually noticeably present in the video itself with the
males giving winks at females and cutting to them, possibly to identify with men
attempting to flirt with women a lot.
