It focusses on contributing to infrastructures and open standards to support developers in delivering accessible solutions. The ambitions cover rich Internet applications and mobile devices, in addition to the desktop, as well as a wide range of impairing conditions. Even though the Internet and many of its early services come from a peer-to- peer based design, many of today's popular Internet services are built in a centralized fashion. Emerging technologies such as Cloud Computing make it easier to scale web-based applications up to millions of users. So not only new services, but also traditional applications are moving into the "cloud" and their software can only be used "as a service". This talk will illustrate the trend towards centralised services and explain the reasons for this trend. More importantly, it will show how power is accumulated by service providers and what problems arise from this for users. It will conclude with some solutions and strategies that can help users to remain in control of their computing and their data.

Rikard's presentation: Events for all - A guide for making events accessible Text is CC-BY, Photos/illusgtrations - see photo credits at the end FFKP, The Society for Free Culture and Software, runs a project putting together a guide for how to make an event accessible to all people. In Sweden, there are tons of guides and materials on guidelines, policies, and tips for making different public events more accessible. These are distributed over a large number of government organisations, NGOs and interest groups working with politics for the disabled, and even private business organisations. What FFKP saw as a challenge was first to make a better overview of all these resources but in one place. Second, we saw the need for a guide written not by or for any one of the stakeholders, which can be very different in nature, but also (with the stakeholders). Therefore this guide is written in collaboration and in dialogue with what we identified as the three main stakeholders: Organisers, Visitors and the Society. Organisers are anyone who arranges an event or hosts events at their venue. Visitors are anyone who might have any type of disability, or knowledge thereof. By Society, we mean representatives from any national, regional or local government or its organisations. What makes our approach unique, we believe, is that it aims to produce guidelines, resources and tips produced in dialogue of all three stakeholders, and not from any single perspective. The perspectives of a government authority is very different from that of a society for the rights of the disabled, for instance. We also decided from the very start that we would publish this guide with a free license and we went with Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike. We think it is imperative that a guide like this is a living document which can be built upon, remixed and cited by other forces in the future, without having to ask for permission or going through the hassles of obtaining permissions from the authors.

Email clients haven't moved forward since the mid-1990s. Most applications have added superficial features, but the basics remained unchanged: Folders, lists of disconnected emails sorted by arrival time. Clients have no sense of priority, urgency, workflows, or connectedness. Their search features are simple and are sometimes painfully slow. Users today are bombarded with email and find popular email clients hard to use and inefficient. How did we get here? How do we get out of it? This talk will show new ideas of improving the email experience for overloaded users. Gabor will also talk about commercial opportunities in this field, illustrated with his own experience in Silicon Valley at his previous startup, Xobni, the maker of a popular Outlook-based application. Running Linux on an embedded node in the automotive environment adds a number of new challenges that have to be addressed. One of the problems we have been working on is start-up times. We have trimmed the start-up time of the Linux kernel in less than 0.2 seconds on low end hardware. This presentation will look into and discuss some of the trade-offs we did to get the system starting up quicker on a limited hardware. In an automotive environment many systems have to have there communication up within factions of a second, as the car get more complex more CPU power is needed in many different places. Traditional automotive solutions have been using two CPU’s on each node one small quick starting to handle the communication and one for the applications. If only one CPU can get the main applications starting quick enough that can make the hardware both simpler and cheaper. About Mecel Mecel is a systems and software development company with more than 25 years of experience in developing solutions for the automotive industry. We specialize in in-car communication technologies, user interface development and consumer device interaction.

This talk introduces the Kaizendo project, where the goal is to make books like this possible.

Everyone with the economical and practical resources has the possibility to contribute to any free software project, anyone can join. Unfortunately, reality does not look like this, we have a problem with inequality. If we exclude women from the free software community, we exclude contributors, both women and men. Is software really free if not everybody is free to join?
