Kasur Tanneries Pollution Control Project
Description
Kasur represents almost a third of the total number of tanneries in Pakistan, who produce leather
from sheep, buffalo and cow skins. The Kasur Tanneries Pollution Control Project has been
developed to combat the pollution created by the tanneries.

Kasur Tanneries Pollution Control Project
Host: Prized for their rich milk and dairy price, cattle also
provide Pakistan with the raw material for one of its
biggest foreign earners, leather. But for years, these
luxury goods have had a hidden price tag, damaging
people's health and the environment. Over 130
chemicals are used to preserve, dye, tan and make
leather supple. Untreated, the discharge from the
tanneries is a poisonous cocktail of gasses and heavy
metals that can seep into groundwater and water
supplies a threat to people and to nature.
2. Babar Yaqoob Fateh Mohammad: Apart from
health that if you happened to spend the
night in this city it will be a very difficult
proposition
for you because it smells like anything if ordinary
have been possible for them to continue for so
long in
the local protest was such that they had to do
something about it.
Host: The largest plant of its kind in Asia and rank second
in the world is treatment works on the outskirts of
Kasur is starting to combat the problem. Costing $8
million, the technology was funded mainly by the
provincial government of the Punjab and the United
Nations Development Program with technical
assistance from UNIDO the plants job is to handle
chemical effluent from the 237 surrounding tanneries.
Onder Yucer: Without the plant like this the Pakistan's tanneries
industry would not be complying with international
standards. Tanneries in Pakistan are potentially a
very, very important source of cloth in terms of
employment income and exports. And thus it also
impacts directly the power to eluviations.
Host: The tanneries connected to the plant are in the nearby
town of Kasur. The amount they pay depends on how
much water they use. A handful of local tanneries are
3. still not convinced but this tanneries are relieved
something positive is being done about their industry.
Hafiz Abdul Samad: Obviously everybody is happy that they are having
you say good atmosphere around them instead of
dirty and the quality of life is being improved they're
very happy and they have now got even plant so there
will be chances to export more now than the last.
Yahya Aslam Bambul: The drinking water of this area and the surroundings
was degraded and now it is coming better and better
in the presence of time it should become safe for
drinking.
Host: The blue liquid discharge from the tanneries is known
to contain chromium, a cosmegen as well as other
organic chemical and acids. It's all pump for
treatment plants supply channel. Solid matter is
extracted and the liquid ends up in an equalization
tank where water is added to neutralize salts and
chemicals. From here it goes to the sludge lagoons it
takes up to ten days for the sludge to sink and
separate from the treated water. This water is then
quality-tested to see if it's safe to be pumped back into
the rivers. The main problem is what to do with the
sludge at the moment it's stored in a seal pit that
project managers recon will take about 20 years to fill
the pit will then be covered and new pit dug. The red
color is from the reaction between any remaining
4. enriched chromium on the atmosphere.
Chromium, though a pollutant, is essential to the
tannery business and it can be recovered instead of
being released into the local water. The cost of the
equipment can be recouped within three years through
savings on purchases of the heavy metal.
Onder Yucer: You can recover up to 99% and the cost of that
recovery is almost half of the market price of
chromium so there is a definite obvious net benefit to
the tanneries to recover from here.
Host: Creating an incentive for other tanneries to clean up
the environment.
