2. What is a Migraine? A migraine headache is a form of vascular headache caused by a combination of enlargement of blood vessels and the release of chemicals from nerve fibers that coil around the blood vessels. During a migraine the temporal artery enlarges. The temporal artery gets swollen, causing the nerves to release a chemical. That chemical causes inflammation, further enlargement of the artery and magnifies the pain.
