2. Introduction
The National Foundation for Transplants (NFT)
is a nonprofit organization advocating for
medical patients in need of organ
transplantation. Founded in 1983, the
foundation touches the lives of more than
2,500 patients on an annual basis and has
raised over $60 million in aid.
3. About National Foundation for
Transplants
Originally named the Liver Organ Transplant Fund, the NFT
started when Mary Clouse, Liz Hull, and Elise Waldheim,
three Memphis women, read a newspaper article about a
young girl who could not afford a critical liver transplant. The
continual focused efforts of the three women led to their
raising sufficient money to help the girl afford the transplant.
When their story was publicized, transplant candidates from
around the nation began sending in requests for help. The
organization soon changed its name to Organ Transplant
Fund and then to National Foundation for Transplants, to
reflect its expanded purpose of serving patients in need of all
types of organ transplants, including bone marrow, tissue,
and other types.
