Being an Effective Manager

If you are employed at a job where you have to lead people and be a manager, then you know that it is
at once a unique and rewarding experience. It is also a difficult one as well.

There is a lot to take in when you are a manager, and one has to look at all of the things that affect them
and their team and make good decisions for them. This is not always an easy task, and the job definitely
comes with added pressures.

Effectiveness
Effectiveness is key, as is being able to lead people and to
get results. It is important to note that there is a special
relationship which exists between managers and their
teams, in that they are coworkers but are separate and
not equal.

There needs to be a balance struck between getting
results and allowing people to do the best job that they
can. Indeed, such a balance sometime requires the
manager to step back and allow the work to happen,
rather than interfering with it.

Generally speaking people do not like to be micromanaged, and also do not like the feeling of being
carefully watch in case they make a mistake. These are common workplace pressures that people have
to deal with, but they do represent a real issue that people have.

Therefore, a good manager needs to be able to assign responsibility in a clear and concise way that
makes sense. They must then allow people to achieve that end without interfering with what they are
doing in any pronounced way.

Communication
Communication is key and good communication is even more important than that. As such, it is the
responsibility of a manager to listen to their team in order to know what is possible, what needs to be
improved, and what needs to be left alone.

The other important thing about being a manager is that you’re working with and directing the actions
of people. People are not a focused constant.

People make mistakes and have their own issues and needs and desires. A manager has to know the
best ways to address concerns while also focusing on getting results.

Effectiveness of Motivation
Studies have found that motivation is much more effective of a tool than intimidation is, and that those
who work with fear or without enthusiasm are going to be much less effective overall. As such, another
important quality is the ability to listen to what is being said.
It is also crucial to recognize that along with being an unquantifiable factor which has to be directed,
every person working under a manager has their own strengths to bring to the table along with the
weakness. Acknowledging and encouraging these strengths is a positive thing to do, due to the way it
adds to the overall dynamic which is being developed in your work environment.

All in all, being a good manager is all about investing the time and effort to truly be one, especially in
federal acquisition management. It is an investment, but the results are worth it!
