6th Sunday of Easter - Gospel: John 15:9-17 –
1. John 15:9-17
Remain in my love. My commandment: love one
another as I have loved you, laying down my life. I
chose you to go and bear fruit.
The Holy Bible : Revised Standard Version Second Catholic edition (2006), with the ecclesiastical approval of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Thomas
Nelson Publishing for Ignatius Press.
2. Jesus said to his
disciples: "As the Father
loves me, so I also love
you.
Remain in my love. If you
keep my
commandments, you
will remain in my love,
just as I have kept my
Father's
commandments and
remain in his love.
"I have told you this so
that my joy may be in
you and your joy might
be complete.
This is my commandment:
love one another as I
love you.
No one has greater love
than this, to lay down
one's life for one's
friends.
You are my friends if you
do what I command
you.
I no longer call you
slaves, because a slave
does not know what his
master is doing.
3. I have called you friends, because I have told you everything I have
heard from my Father.
It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you and appointed
you to go and bear fruit that will remain, so that whatever you
ask the Father in my name he may give you.
This I command you: love one another."
4. Life’s Good
When life is good we are happy but when hardship comes along we
fall into depression. Those peaks and valleys of emotion come
with our temporal life.
There are two realities that we need to focus on, the temporariness
of our earthly life and the length of our eternal life.
As we work out our salvation with God’s help we need to focus on
following the commandments in our temporal life so that we can
live in joy for all of eternity.
The ups and downs found in life are the risers and the steps found
in the staircase leading to heaven.
True joy is found in giving your love to others, as Jesus gave His
love to us by dying for sins we committed.
5. Our world and our knowledge is expanding at a rapid rate. Most
people have cell phones in their pockets and a computer in their
homes.
Both pieces of equipment have the ability to extend your love to
others or to withhold your love from others.
Using your cell phone to check on your kids shows that you love
and care for them.
Not answering a call from your child gives a very different
message.
Using your computer to find information, to study various subjects
or to patch up a family feud is an act of love.
Using your computer to send hateful email is bad.
If you live in the love of God the choice is easy, act out of love and
you will show your love of God to others. (1 John 4:20)
Editor's Notes
20 If any one says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, cannot love God whom he has not seen.
