DYNAMIC MARKETS
Over the last decade, the most important
growth rates have been registered by
Asian countries, including China and
Indonesia. It is further interesting to point
out that also some Central and Eastern
European countries including Russia,
Poland and Romania, still comparatively
small mattress consuming markets, regis-tered
significant growth rates. They are
becoming increasingly dynamic local
markets, not yet ‘mature’ as it is the case
for Western European markets like
France and Germany, or North American
markets like the U.S. and Canada.
INTERNATIONAL TRADE CONTINUES
TO GROW
International trade of mattresses contin-ued
to increase in 2013 and reached the
US$ 3.3 billion mark. Forecasts for 2014
and 2015 also indicate an increasing
trend. The ratio of exports over produc-tion
in the mattress segment amounts to
around 15% (it was 8% in 2000).
Although growing, this ratio remains low
compared to the furniture sector.
In the coming years, CSIL estimates that
the overall value for mattress trade will
continue to grow slowly. One of the most
important engines for mattress growth is
the opening of the different mattress mar-kets,
as well as the increasing role of
emerging markets, not only in terms of
productive location for mattress plants
but also in terms of mattress consump-tion.
Another reason is that until recently mat-tresses
were manufactured and sold with-in
the local or neighbouring markets,
being too bulky to be transported eco-nomically
for long distances. Progress in
vacuum packing of mattresses and in
transport logistics has been changing the
economics of mattress trade, and
imports and exports are becoming more
substantial.
Top mattress exporting countries are
China and Poland, followed by Denmark,
Belgium and Italy. In 2012 China became
leading exporter of mattresses among the
35 countries studied. Main mattress
importing countries are the U.S.,
Germany, France, Japan, Canada and
the Netherlands. Looking at the opening
of the markets considered, the share of
imported mattresses in local consump-tion
has been increasing from 8% in
2001 to approximately 12% in 2013. This
import/consumption ratio remains how-

ever still low compared to the furniture
sector.
MATERIAL TRENDS WORLDWIDE
Looking at the various regions of the
world, there are big differences in terms
of mattresses and bases, especially
between the Americas and Europe, as
well as in Asia. Even among the
European countries, the differences of
mattress production and consumption
trends in terms of materials, sizes or
replacement cycles are significant.
Mattress production in North America,
the United Kingdom and Ireland tradition-ally
is mainly concentrated on innerspring
mattresses. Generally in Europe produc-tion
is more concentrated in non-inner-spring
mattresses (foam and latex). In
large areas of Asia, a part of beds used
are still of traditional style.
In Europe the trend towards foam mat-tresses
started years ago. In North

America the trend towards the so called
“specialty bedding”, including all materi-als
other than spring, has recently seen a
growing trend. The positive trend started
in 2010 regarding sales of non-inner-spring
mattresses reversed slightly in
2013 compared to 2012. As a result, the
market share for the non-innerspring
seg¬ment decreased in 2013 in North
America.
The trend worldwide goes towards hybrid
fillings.

6. 2014 U.S. MATTRESS TRENDS:
TECH TALK, TEMPERATURE AND

sales were flat in the first half of

D
mattress sales in 2014 continue to tick
upward, according to monthly statistics
compiled by the International Sleep
Products Association (ISPA), based in
Alexandria, Virginia. This means that
Americans are spending more on their
beds.
Why is that? Mattress manufacturers are
working hard to upsell consumers on bet-ter
bedding. They’re building a range of
features into pricier models. For instance,
today’s queen-size mattress priced from
$1,000 to $2,000 may have temperature-regulating
properties, built-in electronics
and decorative fabrics and trims - giving
the mattress the overall look of uphol-stered
furniture. Inside, you’ll find fabric-

wrapped coils in both the bed’s core and
the comfort layers - sandwiched with high-end
specialty foams like latex or gel-infused
memory foam.
At the same time, many retailers display
every bed on their floor atop an electronic
adjustable base. No longer just for the
elderly, adjustable bases have new appeal
to the always-plugged-in younger genera-tion
who use the bedroom as both office
and living room.
An important macro trend in the U.S. mat-tress
industry, at both the retail and manu-facturer
level, is consolidation. The four
major bed brands controlling the market
are themselves controlled by just two com-panies.
And the country’s largest retail
bedding chain, Mattress Firm, continues
its expansion, month by month, through
acquisitions and new store openings.
Here’s a look at other trends shaping the
U.S. bedding market:
TEMPERATURE CONTROL
At the winter Las Vegas Market in January
and the spring High Point Market in April in
High Point, North Carolina, managing
sleep temperature was a common theme
in bedding showrooms, and the latest
take on temperature control has entered a
new “phase” - the phase-change material
era is definitely here. In addition to ever-present
gels and gel foams, as well as the
use of engineered foams designed to
mechanically aerate beds, growing num-bers
of mattress manufacturers incorpo-rated
phase-change imbued components
into almost every part of the bed.
HIGH-TECH HYBRIDS
In tune with the principal driver of con-sumer
spending in 2013 - the luxury seg-ment
- many manufacturers at the Las
Vegas and High Point furniture markets
launched collections for the well-heeled.

7. FOCUS
MARKETS
Worth noting, a good number of premium
and ultra-premium new beds were sprung
- or hybrid - beds, combining an inner-spring
unit with specialty foams. There
also was much “smart talk” about func-tional
fabrics, intelligent mattresses and
programmable adjustable bases.
FASHION FORWARD
Delving into design, many new beds were
draped in beautiful fabrics, and manufac-turers
in Las Vegas and High Point used
bold knit designs in the bed’s top panel to
call out special comfort features in the
core. Often, the feature being highlighted
down below was poured gel over latex or
over memory foam, sometimes combined
with – yes - phase-change material.
Meanwhile, ISPA EXPO 2014, a biennial
trade show for bedding manufacturers in
New Orleans, also enjoyed a really big
fashion show, with more fabric suppliers,
more sumptuous knits, many tailored con-cept
beds and fabulous cut-and-sewn
covers, more sparkling mattress tapes,
intricately sewn mattress handles and bril-liant
spools of threads. Even the aesthet-ics
of foams and latex seemed to have
grown more beautiful, textured and color-ful
- and then there were those Kelly green
machine parts. In short, this was the U.S.
mattress industry’s biggest design show in
history, and textiles were major scene-stealers.
RETAIL TECHNOLOGY
In-store technology to help consumers
choose the perfect mattress and facilitate
more sales is constantly being improved
upon, as evidenced in Las Vegas and
High Point. And what’s really new is the
sleep-related tech consumers take home
with them. Some vendors have jumped on
board the “quantified-self movement,”
offering consumers tech-filled beds and
mobile apps that allow them to measure,
monitor and – hopefully - improve their
sleep.
COMPONENTRY
Innerspring suppliers offered up their
share of innovation at EXPO - from new
types of pocket-spring welding, to taller
and smaller coils, to far-out wooden
springs.
Use of polyurethane foams in mattresses
and sleep accessories has exploded in
recent years and manufacturers have
dozens, if not hundreds, of foam formula-tions
for memory foam, base foam and
gel-infused foams to choose from.
In addition to abundant decorative panel
fabrics, which are mostly stretch knits,

mattress manufacturers found a wide
range of nonwoven fabrics and recycled
fiber pads to fill and finish the interior and
undersides of bed sets. Traditional uphol-stery
fabric also is finding its way onto bed
borders, and many industry suppliers
have launched entire upholstery lines to fill
this growing need.
The small but growing high-end, “green”
mattress niche is being supplied by a
range of all-natural latex suppliers, textile
and fiber companies. At ISPA EXPO,
there were a number of suppliers of “nat-ural”
and renewable fiber offering coco
fiber, kapok, animal hair, recycled fiber,
etc.
MACHINERY
The continued influence of specialty bed-ding,
a heightened focus on border treat-ments,
and demand for more efficient roll-packing
and shipping options are driving
innovation and improvements in bedding
machinery.
Major manufacturing plants are bringing
processes in-house that were previously
performed by suppliers, such as foam cut-ting
and sewn-cover production. Hence,
they are investing in new foam-fabrication
and sewing equipment. Since foam beds
often ship compressed and rolls, many
are also investing in new packaging lines.
And as trends change with lightning-fast
speed these days, flexibility of machines,
automation and the ability to multitask are
Sewn covers, a European trend that has caught on with U.S. manufacturers, were plentiful at ISPA EXPO,
as more and more mattress makers look to source pre-sewn covers for both all-foam and innerspring beds.

8. ALL ABOUT SLEEP AT IMM
COLOGNE by Sylvia Weichenberger
MM Cologne 2014 (120,000 visi-tors
from 129 countries with 1,100
international exhibitors) was
marked by an increasing interest
I
dedicated to the sleeping segment. For
the first time two halls (hall 9 and hall 5.2)
were entirely dedicated to the ‘SLEEP’
topic, with up to 100 companies from 20
countries exhibiting their products and
innovations.
This years’ focus was on the theme
“Neuro Marketing”. The German
Mattress Industry Association
(Fachverband Matratzenindustrie e.V.)
created a lounge in hall 9, representing
the human brain, showing the different
actions of the brain when taking a buying
decision and representing the connection
of the two halls dedicated to sleep.
Another highlight of this year’s edition was
the "meet@sleep" party which took place
in the lounge area on the second day and
created a very positive feeling. The meet-ing,
organized by the Mattress Industry
Association and KölnMesse, was attended
by business representatives which
exchanged ideas on the latest mattress
industry developments.
BOX-SPRING BEDS EVERYWHERE
Taking a look at the different products on
show at IMM, the box-spring bed has
clearly to be mentioned. The trend is not
new, but this year it almost seemed like
over one half of the dedicated sleeping
halls were filled with manufactures pre-senting
their own box-spring bed model.
The box-spring bed, a tradition in North
American and Nordic countries, is increas-ingly
becoming a part of German bed-rooms,
although their share on total sales
still remains below the 10% mark. The
range of box-spring beds presented goes
from high quality to very basic bases of low
quality and price, which ensures that there
are models for every consumer taste and
budget.
Leading German bedding manufacturers
like Fey or Dunlopillo showed their newest
box-spring collections. Breckle has
already 25-30% of its production being
made of box-spring as well as Diamona,
which continues to increase its share.
FOCUS
FAIRS
BEDDING
According to the Austrian ADA, box-spring
takes an increasingly important part in pro-duction.
The Dutch company Auping pre-sented
its latest collection as well as
Somnus, Vi-Spring, Hästens, and Treca
just to mention a few of the traditional
upper range box-spring bed manufactur-ers.
“Box-spring without spring” was
shown by the Greek company Coco-Mat
with beds made from natural materials in
box-spring design. The German Metzeler
presented a box-spring look a-like bed with
a slat base interior.
MATTRESS: WHAT’S NEW?
Trends seen on the IMM 2014 included
among others hybrid fillings, sustainability
and foam.
Hybrid fillings for mattresses and especial-ly
fillings with gel have been presented by
an increasing number of manufacturers.
Gel can theoretically be combined with
any type of mattress and offers new
approaches in terms of ergonomics and
comfort. For example Schlaraffia, a
Recticel brand, which combines gel with
innerspring as well as Svane, mattress
brand made by Ekornes or the German
Breckle, which presented a combination
of gel and foam.
Sustainability and natural fillings continue
to be a topic. The Greek manufacturer
Coco-Mat presented a 100% natural bed.
The German Metzeler presented a new
layer for mattresses filled with natural
stones called “BioCrystal” and Dormiente
presented its 100% natural latex mattress-es,
just to name a few. Foam mattress
remained omnipresent, especially among
German manufacturers which presented
their latest innovations in Cologne.
What is a box-spring: A box-spring
base is a bed base generally consi-sting
of a wooden frame covered in
cloth, and containing springs. The
box-spring base is usually the same
size as the much softer mattress
which is placed above the box-spring.
A box-spring base is used for
several purposes such as to raise
the height of the mattress, reduce
wear of the mattress and create a
flat and firm structure for the mat-tress
to lay upon.
