  • Social Media
By DahnishImani, Daniel Williams, ChiragThakar, SandipBanwait
  • What is social media?
Social Media is a web based form of social interaction, Social Media utilizes the concept of Web 2.0 and allows users to create, share and interact with various forms of media found on the internet.
  • How has media become social?
Video, music and applications have become a viral part of online community with people expressing themselves constantly over websites such as Facebook and Twitter, it has become tradition to update ones daily occurrences and share them amongst people you have as friends ( although nobody really cares ).
It is a way in which people use a web based profile to project themselves in a manner they see fit, by expressing themselves through media content. In a social context, it can be said that social media is a form of expression and in a society where an alter ego is somewhere on the web, users are always projecting ideas and creativity through social media platforms.
  • Are Television & Radio not social in some way too?
Television and Radio were appliances created for a family entertainment purpose, over the past decade the whole concept of media and how it is consumed, is with a focus on ‘personalisation’. In a society where music is chosen and stored for listening on iPods and mp3 devices rather than through radio shows and stations, we are spoilt for choice and time in which we may consume our favourite media.
Videos, music and games are all accessible through the internet and through pocket devices. With this kind of access to our content and the ability to watch or listen at a time that fits our day means that the idea of Television and Radio are solitary and confined. They are no longer appreciated due to its lack of personalisation. Also comes the simple fact that most media platforms are integrated with the web and therefore available through the click of a button.
  • What is special or different about ‘social media’?
What makes social media special or different is the fact that a decade ago there were no sites such as ‘Facebook’ or ‘Twitter’. This change in social interaction has allowed friends and families to be able to socialise over the internet, and allows friends and families to store photos and videos on the internet for others to see and comment on.
