Prince of Peace Lutheran Church voted at our Congregational Meeting on June 5, 2011 to support this proposal and become a partner in this venture to bring more accessible, affordable, healthy foods to our community via a community garden / urban farm and etc.

1. Warnersville Healthy Community Project Proposal
Project Concept: Improving community health through increasing
access to healthy food choices and increasing physical activity

pressure and obesity in the Warnersville Community (census
tract 11400)

Mobile Farmer’s Market
The Mobile Farmers Market will carry fresh produce to
community sites such as churches, worksites and
community centers on a regular schedule.
• The mobile unit will accept EBT cards and WIC
vouchers.
• In addition to fresh produce, will sell milk, eggs,
cheese
• Sell produce from the Urban Farm and from other
local and regional small farms
• Sell value-added food products—cheese, bakery
products—from local and regional small
producers.
• Deliver food to under-served populations at nursing homes, public housing
• Disseminate cooking instructions and recipes
• Based at the JC Price school annex or other Warnersville area site

4. Community Garden and Farm
The land at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church will be used by Warnersville neighbors and Greensboro
residents to grow food. The space will provide physical activity and access to healthy foods for the residents of
the Warnersville area and wider community while providing opportunities for social and spiritual growth. The
structure (business model) and physical design of the garden/farm will be determined by the stakeholders of
the gardens.
Using a democratic process, the garden/farm will grow food to be distributed to participating neighbors and
through local markets, including the Mobile Farmers Market and Warnersville Farmers Market. Food will be
grown year-round using sustainable and Permaculture growing methods. The garden/farm will include
educational programs for youth and adults on
sustainability, health and wellness. The garden/farm can
be accessed from the SE Greenway Trail and will

enjoying nature and experiencing wildlife; and
meditation. The Farm will provide long-term and full-time
employment, summer employment, job-training for SE Greenway Trail
youth, and volunteer opportunities for everyone.

5. Warnersville Health and Wellness Program
Warnersville Health and Wellness Project will provide individual-level interventions to residents of the
Warnersville Community and SE Greensboro target area:
• Obesity screening and counseling;
o This program will offer screening and health assessments for diabetes, high blood pressure and
obesity, and providing health plans and referrals for community residents
o Health assessment participants will receive incentives (discounts) to the Mobile Farmers Market
• Walking programs
o This program may include walkability assessments of Warnersville neighborhoods and
organized group walking activities
o Walking will be encouraged to participate in the Community Garden and Farmers Market
• Healthy cooking classes
o Through train-the-trainer efforts, local residents will be educated on healthier methods of
cooking traditional cultural foods and will then educate others in the community through cooking
demonstrations, classes, and on-line (YouTube) videos
o Project partners will develop culturally-appropriate healthy recipes that will be disseminated
through the Mobile Farmers Market and Community Farmers Market.
