2. Chile is longest north to south country in the world. It reaches over 2,880 miles north to south and only 265 miles east to west. It is located within the Pacific Ring of Fire. Geography
3. Geography Southern Chile is vast in forests, grazing lands, and has a few volcanoes and lakes. Northern Chile has more of the minerals, primarily copper and nitrates. Also located in Chile are the Andes Mountains and the Atacama Desert. Chile also owns part of Antarctica, Easter Island, and the Juan Fernandez Islands.
4. The original Native Americans that lived in Chile were known as the Mapuche people. The Mapuche fought with the Spaniards for hundreds of years because the Spaniards were trying to conquer and take over their land. The Spanish then took it over and have been there ever since. People

8. Chile was conquered by the Spanish in 1541 by Pedro de Valdivia. The native people were called Mapuche who tried to regain their land back from the Spanish many times. History
9. There was a Chilean Civil War in 1891which was about the redistribution of power between the President and Congress in Chile. In the early twentieth century, the economy turned into a ruling oligarchy. The middle and working class were just powerful enough to elect a reformist president known as Arturo Alessadri Palma.
