What's my name?

650

Published on

In the multicultural world that we live in how do you know my name. Is my first name my last name? What is my family name and what should you call me. As web site developers we regularly ask people for their name so we can personalise the web, but are we using the correct name?

  • Hi Brian
This is so on target for a project we are working on at the moment - a big multilingual site for European Chemical Industry associations. We've solved one problem by asking for a single name field as you request, but we like the 'nickname' or 'what should we call you' concept and may implement that.

The problem for us is that, although the Joomla! login component may work appropriately (it acknowledges login by using the full name), related applications such as Kunena Forum will automatically assume that the first name in a field is the name to use to address the user. At least - that's our understanding at the moment. Or is there something in the core that can be modified to avoid this? And how would one use the nickname approach?

Not sure we've fully bottomed this out ourselves yet, but you've certainly made us think about it!
    Cheers
    Nick - ExtraMile
