Building an Email List for Your Business
Every business today has an online presence, whether it’s via Twitter or Facebook or both. A good
handful also maintains a separate website of their own, a landing page as online marketers call it, and
this is an excellent move for online marketing purposes. But while a lot of business owners do recognize
the importance of online marketing and try to connect with their customers while attracting a wider
audience, they fail to utilize the single most important internet marketing strategy for your business to
succeed – having an email list.
You might think that having an email list is unimportant. You might be thinking ‘an email list, how
quaint!’ But you couldn’t be more wrong. Not all people have Twitter and some don’t even have
Facebook let alone a Tumblr account, but just about everyone has an email account. In fact, studies
show that most people consider the email that they receive via email critical and are four times more
likely to read emails than social media posts. The same study also showed that 86% of the people who
do open marketing emails end up clicking the link to the website or to more marketing material. That’s
86% compared to the 56% that social media sites get.
It’s effectiveness in getting people to visit your website and view your content is what makes email
marketing the most important internet marketing strategy for your business. By now, you might be
thinking ‘that’s all well and good but how do I start an email list?’ The answer is simple – you can start
by having an opt-in form on your website (this is where having an independent website comes in
handy). It can be as simple as a sign-up form for your company’s newsletter. Or you can create a contest
that requires visitors to log in their emails. Small incentives can do great wonders; even a chance to get
a 15% discount on an item is enough to encourage most of your visitors to opt in.
Before I forget, I also recommend that you choose an email marketing service to help you handle this
internet marketing strategy. It might be easy to handle 20 or even 50 emails, but once you hit the
hundreds or thousands (which is really the goal), you’ll be spending way too much time taking care of
those emails. With the help of email services like MailChimp or AWeber, you can have an easier time
managing your email marketing campaign and also have access to extra services like knowing how many
people actually open your emails or how many click the link in the email body.
Having an email list is a powerful internet marketing strategy but I would strongly advise against buying
an email list that another online entity has acquired. Sure, it’s a fast and easy way to reach a lot of
people pronto but how many of these emails actually qualify for your target audience? Building your
own email list means you have a number of emails belonging to people who have already expressed
interest in your business and want to know more about you. That means they’re more likely to read
what you send them, click your links, and share them with their friends.
