e-Governance: Enabling transparency and
efficiency in government
The need for good governance for India’s development is widely accepted. The challenge before the
Indian government is to look at ways to improve governance. One of the ways to achieve the same is
through the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) or e-Governance, a significant
enabler for the endeavor. India’s National e- Governance Plan (NeGP) has paved the way for a
systematic, wide scale implementation of e-Governance across the country. However, considering
the larger perspective that thousands of departments all over the country are still delivering public
services manually in a largely inefficient manner, e-Governance in India is still at a nascent stage and
implementation of e-Governance strategies in a time bound and efficacious manner is essential to
public interest
The Government’s initiative
The NeGP of the Government of India focuses on the creation of the fundamental
infrastructure required for e-Governance. It takes a holistic view of various
e-Governance initiatives being undertaken across the country and integrates
them into a collective vision of making “all Government services accessible to the
common man in his locality, through common service delivery outlets and ensuring
efficiency, transparency & reliability of such services at affordable costs to realise
the basic needs of the common man” (source: www.mit.gov.in)
