Unit Pricing
Knowing how to use unit pricing can help you decide which of two grocery items is the better
buy. Here is an example:
40 oz of peanut butter costs $3.72.
16 oz of peanut butter costs $1.68.
Divide the number of cents by the number of ounces to find the unit price per ounce.
372¢ Ϭ 40 oz ϭ 9¢ R12
168¢ Ϭ 16 oz ϭ 10¢ R8
The 40-oz jar costs less per ounce, so it is the better buy.
Visit a store. Find three different items that come in two sizes. Use the method above to
find the better buy for each item. Then answer the questions.
1. Based on what you found, would you conclude that a larger size is usually the better
buy? Explain your answer.
2. Could you have used estimation to tell the better buy for any of the items you chose?
Were there any items where estimation would not have helped?
3. Give examples of items where your unit price would be per gallon, per yard,
and per month.
