1. Murals – Used in education
Murals are the paintings that are applied directly on the walls. These are used mainly for
decoration and to place a theme of the enclosed place. There has been a lot of research on the
types of murals and kind of paintings that would suit a particular place. For example, numerous
religious building like church has murals that tell the stories of miracles of the God. A number of
heritage sites and caves also have murals in them telling us that these have been a part of the
world since ages.
Modern world has also put murals to a great decorative usage. These days even the normal
everyday homes of people are decorated with them. To build a theme of the room, murals are
painted. Numerous themes like jungle, safari, cartoons, scenery etc. can be painted in the
regular rooms.
Another very interesting usage of murals is in schools. What if kids could see what they were
being taught? The fascinating stories of history that kids are supposed to mug up from the text
books could be easily painted on the walls and these walls could teach the kids. This is a recent
development in the world of education. Using the walls to teach is one of the most interesting
ideas of the times. The interest of the students and their inclination towards studies grows
multiple folds when they can actually see what they are being taught.
By adding colors and stories to the walls, we also provide an intellectually stimulating
environment for young children. Murals inspire the natural creativity of the kids and encourage
them to try their hand at painting. Usually the schools are painted with cartoon characters of the
era appropriate for the age group that is going to use the classroom. Craftwork is commonly
centered on characters from educational television.
Historical figures and events also inspire children in a lot of ways. If paintings of some historical
figures and events are painted in classrooms, it tends to stay on the minds of young children for
a longer time and thus inspiring them. An interesting way is to let children decide their own
theme for the murals. Once the basic theme of a classroom is fixed, then all the children can give
their own ideas and hence enjoy the entire process from conception to finalization. This kind of
activity is perfect for the kids who do not have academic excellence but have other talents to
show. Doing something like this also strengthens the connection between teachers and students.
More importantly, murals bring the kids closer to the community or history of their own culture.
It leaves an impact on the minds of young children which is very positive and helps in their
overall development.
Mural artist and wall artists are so much in demand because of these new kinds of usages that is
coming up in market. Decorative arts are now being put into different kind of uses including the
education of our children.
