What Will the Communication
Technology Landscape
Look Like in 2024 A.D.?

Per Merriam Webster’s dictionary, the definition of
innovation is the act or process of introducing new
ideas, devices, or methods. You will see in our
presentation how innovation will impact the
technological advances in the areas of social media,
smartphones and the tablet into the year 2024.
Social Media
In general, communication technology has changed
over the course of 10 years. With the vast change
the empire of social media took over.
Social media is changing the way we communicate
and the way we are perceived, both positively and
negatively. Every time you post a photo, or update
your status, you are contributing to your own
digital footprint and personal brand.
-Amy Jo Martin
Social Media
According to Wikipedia: “social networks” or social relations
among people who share interests, activities, backgrounds
or real-life connections. A social network service consists of a
representation of each user (often a profile), his or her social
links, and a variety of additional services”. Besides viewing
the news via telecast social media has become the place to
receive information of all aspects. 10 years from now media
activity such as local and national news will all be on twitter
instead of on local television or national networks.
Social Media
Social networking sites will
continue to have their place on
mobile devices as well as tablets.
However the next step will take
place on television. People are
looking to find news daily
through a social networking site
or somewhere online. There will
be a decline in local and national
news, and it may be just viewed
online, unless it is breaking news.
Social Media
According to the Pew research study in
“January 2014, 74% of online adults use
social networking sites”. From that
percentage I believe that at least 95% of
adults will be using social media in
some sort of way in 2024.
(pewinternet.org) People will be so into
social networking that there also be
booths at drug stores or fast food
restaurants for people to access social
media outlets. Social media will become
more accessible and people will lean on
that more than calling.
Social Media
We already have wearable
technology such as Google
glasses and smart watches
but, it wont stop there. You
will be able to access your
social media will literally be on
the go. The dashboard will be
touch screen, access to an
internet browser, and icons
that connect to social media
sites.
Social Media
The theory that applies to social networking and the future of social
networking would be the Social Learning/Social Cognitive theory. It is
the framework for examining communication technologies, as well as
containing symbolic models of behavior that are functional and
dysfunctional.
The Mobile Phone: The Times
They Are a-Changin’:
The Smartphone of Today:
• Smartphones as we know them today are not
only viewed as a convenience for millions of
users, but to many, they are a necessity.
• Scan a room full of people anytime, anywhere,
and odds are, the smartphone will be the most
dominant accessory in the room.
• People line up for hours waiting for the newest
models of smartphones.
Common Uses of the Smartphone:
Common Uses of the Smartphone
(continued):
• Every smartphone user utilizes their
smartphone to fit their own unique needs
and desires.
• Common uses include: phone calls, internet,
email, text messaging, social networking,
music, camera, television, games, and books.
• Thanks to more than 1 million available
applications (with this number steadily
increasing), the uses of the smartphone
continue to be countless.
Uses and Gratifications Theory
• “This approach sees the users as actively
seeking to use different media to fulfill
different needs”.
• Focus is on the why and how people
choose specific media and communication
technologies and what they do with media
versus how the media affects them.
• Audience-centered/examines the
individuals
Uses and Gratifications Theory
(continued):
• This theory plays a large role in the evolution of communication
technologies.
• The needs of the people have been and will continue to be a
major driving force behind the advancement and persistence of
various communication technologies, including the smartphone.
• If there are no consumers of a product, how can that product
persist? It can be improved, advanced, and/or altered into
something the people will want.
• The evolution smartphones has not occurred without
considerable regard to how and why people use them.
• Why are land-lines becoming a thing of the past for many people?
The answer lies within this theory. Cell phones are satisfying the
people’s needs all on their own.
Food for Thought From the Late Steve Jobs
(co-founder, chairman, and CEO of Apple Inc.):
• “The cure for Apple is not cost-cutting. The cure for Apple
is to innovate its way out of its current predicament.”
• “Sometimes when you innovate, you make mistakes. It is
best to admit them quickly, and get on with improving your
other innovations.”
• “It’s not about pop culture, and it’s not about fooling
people, and it’s not about convincing people that they
want something they don’t. We figure out what we want.
And I think we’re pretty good at having the right discipline
to think through whether a lot of other people are going to
want it, too. That’s what we get paid to do. We just want to
make great products.”
The Smartphone of Tomorrow:
• The uses and gratifications theory will most certainly play a role in
the smartphone people will see in 2024.
• What will it do that it doesn’t already do? How can it advance even
more than it has already? It can, and it will, because the
smartphone is only going to get smarter!
• The evolution and history of the smartphone is evidence that
advancements and improvements may very well be limitless.
• New smartphones are released every year, and what is the appeal
of purchasing the newest model? It is an upgrade and improvement
of the last model, aka, it is “smarter”.
• As the needs of the people continue to grow and change, the
smartphone will continue to do the same.
Smartphones Today Vs. Smarter
Phones Tomorrow:
• FaceTime: 2-way
• Applications: over 1 million since
2007.
• Land-line phones: still exist.
• Voice recognition: limited.
• Memory Storage: increasing steadily
• Text messaging: voice texting
available.
• Security options: locks, passwords,
fingerprint recognition
• Overall perception: Smartphones of
today are increasing with the needs
an desires of users; smart is great!
• FaceTime: 3-way, 4- way, 5-way?
• Applications: at least 2 million+ at the
current rate.
• Land-line phones: I remember those…
• Voice recognition: the norm.
• Memory Storage: continues to grow to
fit the needs of the people.
• Text messaging: voice texting is the
norm.
• Security options: a mixture of
passwords, fingerprint recognition,
and voice recognition.
• Overall perception: Tomorrow’s
smartphone will be the result of what
people need and desire and even
things they do not even know they
want yet; smarter is better!
What will the tablet look
like in the year 2024?
Will it be significantly
different in only 10 years?
YES!
It will be significantly different.
I believe the majority of these
changes will be due to the use of
the “Critical Mass Theory”.
The “Critical Mass Theory” is
defined as “a small segment of the
population that chooses to make
big contributions to the public
good”.
In 2024, the tablet
will be used by
everyone daily
instead of laptops or
desktop computer.
They will be much
lighter than the
current versions and
will have a much
quicker processor.
They will be
transparent in color.
Tablets will work
by utilizing eye
readers. There
will no longer be
a need for touch
screens. They will
also have the
ability to project
holograms
instead of using
features such as
Facetime.
These changes to the tablet as we know it
will drastically enhance everyday life from
the student at school to the CEO at a
Fortune 500 company.
The Future Starts Now…
The future of technology is unfolding before our eyes,
and quickly. What is the next big thing? Holograms?
Robots? Flying cars? “Smart” homes?
While we may not necessarily see these developments
available to the general public in the near future, one
thing is certain: technology is continuously evolving and
advancing. Anything seems possible.
Social media, smartphones, and tablets are just a few of
many technologies that have created a solid foundation
for longevity in an age where advancement equals
survival. The question does not appear to be whether or
not these technologies will still exist in the year 2024,
but how will they transform in the years to come?

We figure out what we want. And I think we’re pretty good at having the right discipline to think through whether a lot of other people are going to want it, too. That’s what we get paid to do. We just want to make great products.”
  • 16. The Smartphone of Tomorrow: • The uses and gratifications theory will most certainly play a role in the smartphone people will see in 2024. • What will it do that it doesn’t already do? How can it advance even more than it has already? It can, and it will, because the smartphone is only going to get smarter! • The evolution and history of the smartphone is evidence that advancements and improvements may very well be limitless. • New smartphones are released every year, and what is the appeal of purchasing the newest model? It is an upgrade and improvement of the last model, aka, it is “smarter”. • As the needs of the people continue to grow and change, the smartphone will continue to do the same.

  • 19. What will the tablet look like in the year 2024? Will it be significantly different in only 10 years?
  • 20. YES! It will be significantly different.
  • 21. I believe the majority of these changes will be due to the use of the “Critical Mass Theory”. The “Critical Mass Theory” is defined as “a small segment of the population that chooses to make big contributions to the public good”.
  • 22. In 2024, the tablet will be used by everyone daily instead of laptops or desktop computer. They will be much lighter than the current versions and will have a much quicker processor. They will be transparent in color.
  • 23. Tablets will work by utilizing eye readers. There will no longer be a need for touch screens. They will also have the ability to project holograms instead of using features such as Facetime.
  • 24. These changes to the tablet as we know it will drastically enhance everyday life from the student at school to the CEO at a Fortune 500 company.
  • 25. The Future Starts Now… The future of technology is unfolding before our eyes, and quickly. What is the next big thing? Holograms? Robots? Flying cars? “Smart” homes? While we may not necessarily see these developments available to the general public in the near future, one thing is certain: technology is continuously evolving and advancing. Anything seems possible. Social media, smartphones, and tablets are just a few of many technologies that have created a solid foundation for longevity in an age where advancement equals survival. The question does not appear to be whether or not these technologies will still exist in the year 2024, but how will they transform in the years to come?
