In September 2017, the UK Government asked former Mayor of London Sir Roger
Gifford, himself a finance expert, to lead an independent task force to find ways of
increasing the country’s low carbon economy and the adoption of green finance.

This led to the creation of the Green Finance Taskfor-
ce, which came up with a number of recommenda-
tions on how the private sector and the government
can collaborate on making green finance a vital
aspect of the country’s financial services.
The resulting report, titled ‘Accelerating Green
Finance’, elaborates on some of the ways the UK can
position itself as a leading centre for green finance.
The creation of a Green Finance Institute is sugges-
ted in this regard, which can act as a hub for all work
relating to the green sector. The report also suggests
that issuance of a green sovereign bond by the
Government which would help provide funding for
various green projects.
In gathering data for the report, the Taskforce approa-
ched more than 140 organisations in the energy
and finance sector. The wide range of collaborating
companies made it possible to come up with a raft
of proposals, which highlighted the need for more
investment in innovative clean technologies.
