Marian Anderson was an African American concert singer born in 1897 who lived until 1993. She was the first African American to record spirituals for a major U.S. recording company and graduated from high school at age 24. Throughout her career, she started a scholarship fund for young singers and sang the national anthem at John F. Kennedy's 1961 inauguration.
