6 minutes and 57 seconds. This is
how fast the new 918 Spyder with
the Weissach Package recently went
around the Nurburgring. That is ab-
solutely blisteringly fast and the fast-
est of any full bodied production car.
The only production car with a faster
lap time was a Radical SR8 which is
a sportsracer that masquerades as
a street legal car. For comparison
purposes the 911 GT2 RS with Walter
Rohrl at the helm did a 7:33. This is
what makes Porsche such an amaz-
ing manufacturer. They are never
satisfied and are always pushing the
limits - more power per liter of dis-
placement, more advanced materi-
als to add lightness (for you Colin
Chapman fans) and increase stiff-
ness, continuously evolving suspen-
sion designs, and the list goes on.
The 918 is the latest example of this
constant innovation and I can’t wait
to see (and hear) one in person!
Continuing on with the theme of
Porsches I can’t wait to see in person
– the new 911 Targa is due to arrive
any time and I absolutely love the
retro styling. The 911 Targa was such
an iconic car with its distinct roll
hoop as a primary design element,
and Porsche lost its way over the
years when they went to the slide
back roof design. The new design
looks gorgeous and I have watched
the video of the roof automatically
folding back a ridiculous number of
times, and marvel at it ever time. If I
actually had the bank account to buy
one of them, I would probably wear
it out in my garage just watching the
top open…close…open…close…
On to club happenings - May kicks
off the track season for the year with
our first Driver’s Education event
which is being held at Mid-Ohio, The
event will have taken place before
this newsletters hits the mailboxes,
but fear not – we have two more
this year. Our next one is at Nelson
Ledges on June
14-15 where we
will also be having out annual all
member steak dinner social event
at the track on Saturday night com-
plete with craft beer, lots of wine, and
Chinese lanterns! We will then be
back to Mid-Ohio for our final DE on
September 27-28. If you have never
attended a Driver’s Ed event, I highly
encourage you to at least come and
checkitout. Althoughthethoughtof
taking your Porsche out on the track
may be a little intimidating to some,
the Porsche Driver’s Education pro-
gram is a highly structured program
that is designed to let you learn to
drive your car at speed on the track
in a very safe and controlled environ-
ment. Participants are placed into
run groups based on experience and
all are assigned an instructor to show
you the way around the track and to
make sure you stay safe and have
fun. I guarantee you will be blown
away by how much you learn about
the capabilities of your car,and more
importantly,about the capabilities of
you as a driver.
We continue to flesh out the so-
cial calendar for the year and have
some great events planned. We will
be having several house parties this
summer as usual, including a Presi-
dential House Party hosted by Tara
and myself in July. We have always
enjoyed going to house parties and
figured it was high time for us to
give back and host one of our own!
I don’t think we can outdo Mike and
Sue with their fantastic rib burn-off
that they host every year (and will
again this year in August), but we
look forward to putting on a great
party for everyone and look forward
to being able to open our house to
our extended Porsche Club family!

Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,
Before all of our regions’driving seasons began, it was time for us
to hold our Zone 4 Presidents’and DE Meetings. This year’s meet-
ings comprised a weekend full of activities which began on Friday night with a Wel-
come Reception at Forrester’s on the River. We were given use of their private dining
room and provided with a reserved parking area for our Porsches. The next morning
started bright and early with the Presidents’Meeting, while the spouses were treated
to a guided tour at theToledo Museum of Art which included a travelling exhibit from
the Louvre. I am pleased to announce that every region within Zone 4 was well rep-
resented, with most regions sending a number of members,as we filled the ballroom
at the Maumee Bay Resort. In addition, we had a nice representation from National
on hand to help present various topics and programs, and also to answer some of the
Regions’ discussion topics during our round table forum. After an informative and
enlightening day of interactive discussions, many of us went out to enjoy an enter-
taining evening of dinner and then headed to the Hollywood Casino for some social
playtime. Sunday’s meeting was dedicated to addressing DE questions and concerns
and proved to be informative to the participants as well. A great deal was accom-
plished during this weekend, including the unveiling of the new Zone 4 logo which
you will be seeing soon. I also announced that restructuring and overhauling of the
Zone 4 website is underway. Most importantly,I wanted this weekend to be a balance
of productive discussion and education as well as a chance for us to socialize and
bond through fun, light hearted activities thereby promoting my main theme for the
weekend, which was to encourage all of us to join forces and come together in order
to start working as 1 cohesive Zone.
Be sure to check your local region’s website and newsletter for the latest details on
the many events close to you that are being planned. Also, consider attending other

		 2014 CHARITY RECIPIENT SELECTED
We are pleased to announce the selected charity for 2014 is the“BackPack for
Kids” program at the Greater Cleveland Food bank. This program provides
food for the children to take home over the weekend. The kids receive meals
during the week at school but often have nothing to eat over the weekend.
This program places food in a backpack and sends it home with the kids.
NORPCA can make a big difference in the kids lives and help fight hunger
right here in the Greater Cleveland area.
You will see a backpack at various events throughout the year. We will accept
monetary donations for this program, please slip them into the backpack
(cash or check). We greatly appreciate any support!
RAFFLE FOR A PORSCHE WATCH
The Porsche watch raffle was such a hit last year, therefore we are selling
tickets again. They will be available at the various events throughout the
year. The drawing will take place at the end of the year Holiday party. Take
a chance to win a 911 Turbo watch (valued at $690) courtesy of Porsche of
North Olmsted. Once again North Olmsted is helping to support our charity
efforts. Tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50. If you won’t be able to get to any
of the events but want to buy tickets, call Karen at 330-467-4456 to make
arrangements to send a check and receive your tickets by mail.
If you would like to get involved with the club’s charity fund raising efforts
it would be great to have you. Ways to get involved include helping out at
an event, selling raffle tickets, offering ideas or collecting donated items for
future raffles. Please call Karen Latsko at 330-467-4456 or klatsk@aol.com.

919 Scores Debut Podium At Rain Soaked Silverstone

The various Porsche “werks” racing teams around the world had a
mixed month of April. In the United States United Sports Car championships
Long Beach event the Porsche North American squad suffered from high tire
wear and bad luck. An unfortunately timed pit stop relegated the highest
finishing Porsche Factory 911 to 4th place, stuck behind the winning and
3rd place Corvettes and the BMW Z4 after the final pit-stop gave driver Nick
Tandy less than ideal track position. Although Porsche would have loved a
podium or 2, the factory team still leads the manufactures standings. Across
the pond at the 6 Hours Of Silverstone the 2 factory Porsche GT-LM class
cars did a little too well. After a dominating 1-2 finish after a little less than 6
hours, FIA official’s decided the 911’s were too fast and gave them an extra
25kg to run with at the next endurance race. Porsche’s #20 919 Hybrid had
a very successful debut with a third place finish for the car driven by F1 race
winner Mark Webber, Le Mans Winner Timo Bernhard and former Mercedes
F1 test driver Brandon Hartley.Although the result is promising for Le Mans,it
isn’t quite as successful as it first appears. The #14 Porsche 919 had a terminal
drivetrain failure after only 30 laps on track, and both Audi R18’s failed to fin-
ish, making a podium finish significantly easier considering the #20 919 was
one of 3 factory LMP1 cars running. The next challenge for the 919 will be
early May at Spa..

Porsche I. Q. Quiz
May 2014 1716 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk
For years I had been
hearing about the Swap
Meet in Hershey, PA. My
personal Porsche mentor,
Mark Schlachter of Metalkraft
Coachwerkes in Cincinnati,
had told me countless stories
of his findings and adventures
at the Swap Meet and the
sea of Porsches that could be
found cruising the lot. Finally,
this year I got to attend and
now know why Mark, and
countless other Porsche
enthusiasts, look forward to
this event each and every
year.
	 A Cincinnati native and
once the youngest member of
the Porsche Club of America,
Ohio Valley Region, Porsches
have consumed my thoughts
since as a youngster. I recently
moved back to the Cincinnati
from the Bay Area in May of
2013 after getting an MBA
at The University of San
Francisco.
So, how did I end-
up at the Hershey Swap
Meet? By using my MBA in
Entrepreneurial Studies in
conjunction with my love of
the Porsche car – I started my
own Porsche parts business.
I am about two months into
owning my own business- The
New Garage, LLC - and the
perfect place to find parts,
meet people, and admire
beautiful cars is the Hershey
Swap Meet. So, here we go!
	 Leaving Cincinnati
early Friday morning, a group
of us caravanned our way up
to Hershey, PA in order to be
at the Swap Meet bright and
early on Saturday morning.
Mark, our resident Porsche
aficionado spurred us on by
indicating that ‘the good deals
are gone when the flashlights
go off”. Hence, we definitely
were the early bird. Watching
the vendors set-up their
displays, hearing and then
seeing all the numerous and
varied Porsche cars arrive, and
then enjoying the banter with
the other Porsche car lovers
only made the experience
more enjoyable.
	 The Swap Meet area
at Hershey is in the middle
of the Giant Center parking
lot. Attendee parking is on
the right side as one enters
and Concourse parking is
on the left. The Swap Meet
area itself was fairly large,
with approximately 20 rows
of venders. There were three
types of vendors represented.
Individual vendors, people
with extra parts, and
manufacturers/retail vendors
all displayed in this common
area.
Having never been to
a swap meet, let alone one as
famous as Hershey, I was glad
that we had come early and
had given ourselves plenty
of time to enjoy all the sites
and sounds. While walking
up and down the rows of
vendors, I was impressed
by the rare parts that were
available, many I had seen
only in magazines. There were
wheels a plenty with early
Cups to narrow Fuchs with
many Phone Dials and a set
of Flat Dishes from a 928. The
Restoration Design INC booth
was impressive, especially
with the Pink Pig Livery on a
tubbed 911- very creative!
Hershey Swap Meet –
Perspective From A First Timer

Hershey Swap Meet
Ben Brinker - The New Garage LLC
May 2014 1918 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk
I was surprised by
how many 914 parts there
were available and multiple
gauge sets – both individual
gauges to full clusters. There
were several body panels and
doors as well as bumpers. My
observation of these parts
may have been colored by the
fact that one of my buddies
was looking for 914 parts and
hence, my keen interest. But,
none the less, the display was
impressive.
The Porsche
memorabilia and art was very
impressive also. I thoroughly
enjoyed my time digging
through the old Matchbox
and Hotwheels inventory,
looking for toys I had when I
was little. I found a few that
brought back simpler times
and I honestly wanted to buy
them. However, my adult
endeavors must be focused
on larger, more useful parts,
so I promised myself to come
back next year for ‘toy” cars!
There were some
excellent posters and wall art
all available throughout the
swap. There was one set of
4 posters that really caught
my eye. Included in this set
was a 917 painting that was
awesome - but a buddy of
mine bought the set. I regret
that one!
I took a trip down
memory lane when I visited
the Fabspeed booth where
they had their 993 RSR, a
car I used to listen to on a
weekly basis in high school
by watching their exhaust
videos. That car sounds like a
monster.
Porsche had a booth
too, of course. Many items
of clothing and almost
everything from the Porsche
Drivers Selection was available
to view. The Swap area was
interesting, well thought-out,
and with a wide selection of
items. Anything you could
think of was in the Swap area.
But, that wasn’t the only point
of interest at this Hershey
Swap Meet.
Not only were there
parts galore, there was
also a plethora of Porsches
surrounding your every move.
Once we started driving down
the main entrance, all we saw
were Porsches. which was
great; that is all we wanted
to see. For the rest of the day,
more and more kept filing in.
Part of our caravan
drove up in an early Lapis
Blue 996 and parked behind
a beautiful Carrera White 993
Carrera 4S. A few spots over
was a well driven G-Series
with some patina that made
you want to drive that car all
day long. Straight ahead was
the for sale lot – we walked
over and saw a nice collection.
There was a 993 Carrera RS
for sale, which I did not have
the ware withal to confirm if
it was a real RS that jumped
the pond or not. A Strosek
was hanging out as well.
There was a 944 Turbo S with
that awesome plaid interior
and a whole array of Porsche
models from a 914 to a
Cayenne. I missed a gorgeous
993 Cab that was in the For
Sale lot - I saw it on my way
in and thought ‘I will get back
to it’. Well, I missed it – black
exterior red interior black top.
Would have like to look more
closely at that!
We then ventured
behind our parking spot to
Patron Parking – Porsche only,
I might add. The variation
of colors of classic 911s is
so entertaining. Seeing a
vibrant blue on a 911T in the
sunlight is something that
makes you appreciate that
generation of 911. Moving on
we encountered an army of
Guard’s Red soldiers. That, of
course, was the 944 area.
I am a big fan of the
944, especially Turbos. There
was one particular 944 Turbo
that was outstanding. The
paint was in excellent shape
and the car was definitely well
maintained and thought out.
It was sitting with the proper
amount of height on two
piece Cup wheels. Other than
being an eye-catcher, it was
completely stock. Simplicity is
best sometimes.
Two identical 912E’s
were parked together –
made me think that either
they came together or this
happened by some divine
Porsche power. A two-tone
green 924 Turbo made an
appearance from 1980 and
rocked every bit of it.
May 2014 2120 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk
A 997 Carrera 4 GTS in
Ipanema Blue Metallic was a
real show stopper.
Two Carrera GT’s
graced the show with their
presence, both GT Silver, one
with black interior and one
Terracotta. The sound of a
Carrera GT is like nothing else
and luckily I was present for a
little rev session by one of the
examples. Thank you for that
Hershey.
Moving down the line
we ran into a 356 Speedster
and an over-the-top pretty
356 B in white – complete
with sidewalls and all. We
also spotted the first 911 my
friend ever drove – a G Series
Cab, Carrara White with red
interior, black top with Fuchs
–a gorgeous car that served as
the beginning of his life-long
passion for Porsches.
At the end of this
lot we approached the
Concourse area. The 928
attendance was impressive as
well as the 944s and 968s. I
got to see some 968s in colors
I have never seen before –
Speed Yellow and Riviera
Blue. In this area there was
an excellent showing of long
hood 911s with the orange
RSR at the front of the lot and
the blue RSR holding up the
back of the lot. Both were
impressively done and shined
in the daylight.
A lot of pretty 993s
showed up in this area too.
A Guards Red 993 Turbo
(can never go wrong here),
a Midnight Blue C4S and a
black GT2 Clone that was very
well sorted. There were some
great 356s too, a slammed
B in bronze and another B
rolling on Fuchs, a bright red
C Coupe and a cream on tan
Cab – this color combination
on a 356 really impressed me.
All in all, the Hershey
Swap meet was an incredibly
enjoyable experience. While
the physical size of the whole
show was impressive and the
endless parts you could sort
through was more than you
could have fancied – the best
part was and always will be
the Porsche community.
Getting together with your friends and surrounding
yourselves with the very thing that brought you all together in
the first place– Porsche- is joyous. Community is the real reason
we all joined together for the Hershey Swap Meet. Yes, there
were the tangible needs, such as a 914 passenger door but, in
the end, we are all one big Porsche family excited to be around
fellow enthusiasts who know our ‘affliction’.
Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was quoted saying “I couldn’t
find the car of my dreams so I created one myself.” Well, Dr.
Porsche would be ecstatic to see that not only did he create
a car for fellow dreamers but he also spawned a community
that appreciate and build on his dream. It is our responsibility
as Porsche enthusiasts to continue Dr. Porsche’s dream and
there is no better meeting place for this than the Hershey Swap
Meet.
I know I will be attending next year and from here on
out. – I hope to see all of you next year also!

Our second Driver’s Education event is being held at nearby
Nelson Ledges Road Course.Nelson Ledges is a great track
for both beginners and veterans alike. While it doesn’t have
the world class facilities like Mid-Ohio,it has a charm to it that
keeps folks coming back. This event has a very laid back atmo-
sphere and is always a good time.We are once again teaming
up with the Mid-Ohio and Alegheny Regions and will be host-
ing the 944Fest,so expect a full house.
We are also having our annual cookout dinner Saturday night,
June 15th and, once again,Porsche of Beachwood has gra-
ciously offered to sponsor the event and open it to the whole
NORPCA membership, not just the event participants.
We will have a couple kegs of beer, wine, appetizers, steak
or chicken, baked potato, and dessert. So if you have always
wanted to check out what a DE is all about, this is a good
chance to come out to the track mid-afternoon on Saturday,
check out the event, and then stay for dinner.Last year we had
close to 170 people come out for dinner.
Please contact Skip Wolfe at skipwolfe@gmail.com or 440-527-

As I sit here at 3 am taking a break from study-
ing,I can’t help but think about just how busy
this month has been for both myself and the
club.
In NORPCA news, the club had a multitude
of successful events this month. The new
members’party kicked off the month. Unfor-
tunately, I was unable to attend, but am as-
sured that it went off without a hitch. I’d also
like to extend a warm welcome to all the new
members and I look forward to meeting you
at some future events.
In the middle of the month the club held a
TechTalk at MAGNET (Manufacturing Advoca-
cy Growth Network). The MAGNET talk led
by longtime club member, car tech guru and
Daytona Track Day Chief Dave Pierson. Dave
gave an intriguing presentation on the uses,
automotive and otherwise, of CAD programs
and 3-D Printing technologies such as Polyjet
and FDM. As a high school student contem-
plating a career in engineering, MAGNET
was a dream comes true. The possibilities of
Rapid Prototyping Development are endless
and amazing. The most incredible thing to my
gear-headed self was that MAGNET worked
hand in hand with Stoddard parts to recreate
a 356 door handle so rare that the only pre-
served copies were in the Porsche Museum.
Not only was Dave and his team able to help
recreate the handle, but they were also able
to redesign a small portion of it to help en-
sure better longevity. Other car related MAG-
NET creations include the “turbulators” Dave
created for his 944, giving him extra stability
on a track like Daytona .
While I was busy marveling over the automo-
tive gizmos, we were duly impressed by the
3-D printed skull made from a CAT scan that
was used to properly adapt a life saving skull
implant. Serious stuff. The over 21 crowd
also enjoyed a tour of the Cleveland Whis-
key innovative production line, which was
designed with the MAGNET team’s help, and
some samples.
To cap the event Dave’s team created 3-D
printed models of Mid-Ohio and Watkins
Glenn tracks that were auctioned off to ben-
efit Harvest for Hunger. Everyone also re-
ceived a souvenir Porsche themed shot glass
produced for the event. I left with a new-
found appreciation and desire for CAD and a
parking ticket.Whoops.
The final PCA event was the season’s first au-
tocross clinic. You can find pictures online
and in this issue.

Personally I also had an
eventful month.I finally
put on my summer tires
only to be greeted the next day with a bliz-
zard. After the snow finally melted for good,
my dad and I celebrated with a SCCA Track-
day at Nelson Ledges, my first ever. NORPCA’s
own Paul Radey got stuck in a car with me,
but thankfully we both ended the day in one
piece. He did claim I broke the record for most
“BRAKE!”s he was able to get out before a stu-
dent actually obeyed (8).
It was great to be take part in my first track
day and even better to have a trusted PCA
member as my instructor. Thank you Paul.
The only downside is I still need to wait an-
other year to be able to participate with the
PCA. Apart from taking some photos at the
car control clinic the rest of my month was
taken up between schoolwork and working
on some redesign ideas for Voices. I imple-
mented a couple this month, please let me
know what you think of the changes and
send me any ideas, advice, criticism, stories,
event write-ups or business proposals (okay
maybe that is unlikely) to
VoicesFromTheTrunk@gmail.com.
Before I sign off I just want to give a quick
shout out to Ben Brinker of Cincinnati Ohio
for writing the Hershey article this month.
Ben is a recent business school grad who is
working on running and creating his own
Porsche parts and consignment business.
Expect to hear more from him on that in the
coming months and checkout his website
thenewgarage.com if you get the chance. I
hope to see him and the rest of you at one of
the many PCA events in the coming month.
If you are interested in seeing some more
photos of the MAGNET event you can check

materials. You can checkout the pictures on

This is how fast the new 918 Spyder with the Weissach Package recently went around the Nurburgring. That is ab- solutely blisteringly fast and the fast- est of any full bodied production car. The only production car with a faster lap time was a Radical SR8 which is a sportsracer that masquerades as a street legal car. For comparison purposes the 911 GT2 RS with Walter Rohrl at the helm did a 7:33. This is what makes Porsche such an amaz- ing manufacturer. They are never satisfied and are always pushing the limits - more power per liter of dis- placement, more advanced materi- als to add lightness (for you Colin Chapman fans) and increase stiff- ness, continuously evolving suspen- sion designs, and the list goes on. The 918 is the latest example of this constant innovation and I can’t wait to see (and hear) one in person! Continuing on with the theme of Porsches I can’t wait to see in person – the new 911 Targa is due to arrive any time and I absolutely love the retro styling. The 911 Targa was such an iconic car with its distinct roll hoop as a primary design element, and Porsche lost its way over the years when they went to the slide back roof design. The new design looks gorgeous and I have watched the video of the roof automatically folding back a ridiculous number of times, and marvel at it ever time. If I actually had the bank account to buy one of them, I would probably wear it out in my garage just watching the top open…close…open…close… On to club happenings - May kicks off the track season for the year with our first Driver’s Education event which is being held at Mid-Ohio, The event will have taken place before this newsletters hits the mailboxes, but fear not – we have two more this year. Our next one is at Nelson Ledges on June 14-15 where we will also be having out annual all member steak dinner social event at the track on Saturday night com- plete with craft beer, lots of wine, and Chinese lanterns! We will then be back to Mid-Ohio for our final DE on September 27-28. If you have never attended a Driver’s Ed event, I highly encourage you to at least come and checkitout. Althoughthethoughtof taking your Porsche out on the track may be a little intimidating to some, the Porsche Driver’s Education pro- gram is a highly structured program that is designed to let you learn to drive your car at speed on the track in a very safe and controlled environ- ment. Participants are placed into run groups based on experience and all are assigned an instructor to show you the way around the track and to make sure you stay safe and have fun. I guarantee you will be blown away by how much you learn about the capabilities of your car,and more importantly, about the capabilities of you as a driver. We continue to flesh out the so- cial calendar for the year and have some great events planned. We will be having several house parties this summer as usual, including a Presi- dential House Party hosted by Tara and myself in July. We have always enjoyed going to house parties and figured it was high time for us to give back and host one of our own! I don’t think we can outdo Mike and Sue with their fantastic rib burn-off that they host every year (and will again this year in August), but we look forward to putting on a great party for everyone and look forward to being able to open our house to our extended Porsche Club family! pace lap PRESIDENT SKIP WOLFE 2014-2015 NORPCA OFFICERS

This year’s meet- ings comprised a weekend full of activities which began on Friday night with a Wel- come Reception at Forrester’s on the River. We were given use of their private dining room and provided with a reserved parking area for our Porsches. The next morning started bright and early with the Presidents’Meeting, while the spouses were treated to a guided tour at theToledo Museum of Art which included a travelling exhibit from the Louvre. I am pleased to announce that every region within Zone 4 was well rep- resented, with most regions sending a number of members,as we filled the ballroom at the Maumee Bay Resort. In addition, we had a nice representation from National on hand to help present various topics and programs, and also to answer some of the Regions’ discussion topics during our round table forum. After an informative and enlightening day of interactive discussions, many of us went out to enjoy an enter- taining evening of dinner and then headed to the Hollywood Casino for some social playtime. Sunday’s meeting was dedicated to addressing DE questions and concerns and proved to be informative to the participants as well. A great deal was accom- plished during this weekend, including the unveiling of the new Zone 4 logo which you will be seeing soon. I also announced that restructuring and overhauling of the Zone 4 website is underway. Most importantly,I wanted this weekend to be a balance of productive discussion and education as well as a chance for us to socialize and bond through fun, light hearted activities thereby promoting my main theme for the weekend, which was to encourage all of us to join forces and come together in order to start working as 1 cohesive Zone. Be sure to check your local region’s website and newsletter for the latest details on the many events close to you that are being planned. This program provides food for the children to take home over the weekend. The kids receive meals during the week at school but often have nothing to eat over the weekend. You will see a backpack at various events throughout the year. We will accept monetary donations for this program, please slip them into the backpack (cash or check). We greatly appreciate any support! RAFFLE FOR A PORSCHE WATCH The Porsche watch raffle was such a hit last year, therefore we are selling tickets again. They will be available at the various events throughout the year. The drawing will take place at the end of the year Holiday party. Take a chance to win a 911 Turbo watch (valued at $690) courtesy of Porsche of North Olmsted. Once again North Olmsted is helping to support our charity efforts. Tickets are $20 each or 3 for $50. If you won’t be able to get to any of the events but want to buy tickets, call Karen at 330-467-4456 to make arrangements to send a check and receive your tickets by mail. If you would like to get involved with the club’s charity fund raising efforts it would be great to have you. Ways to get involved include helping out at an event, selling raffle tickets, offering ideas or collecting donated items for future raffles. An unfortunately timed pit stop relegated the highest finishing Porsche Factory 911 to 4th place, stuck behind the winning and 3rd place Corvettes and the BMW Z4 after the final pit-stop gave driver Nick Tandy less than ideal track position. Although Porsche would have loved a podium or 2, the factory team still leads the manufactures standings. Across the pond at the 6 Hours Of Silverstone the 2 factory Porsche GT-LM class cars did a little too well. After a dominating 1-2 finish after a little less than 6 hours, FIA official’s decided the 911’s were too fast and gave them an extra 25kg to run with at the next endurance race. Porsche’s #20 919 Hybrid had a very successful debut with a third place finish for the car driven by F1 race winner Mark Webber, Le Mans Winner Timo Bernhard and former Mercedes F1 test driver Brandon Hartley.Although the result is promising for Le Mans,it isn’t quite as successful as it first appears. The #14 Porsche 919 had a terminal drivetrain failure after only 30 laps on track, and both Audi R18’s failed to fin- ish, making a podium finish significantly easier considering the #20 919 was one of 3 factory LMP1 cars running. The next challenge for the 919 will be early May at Spa.. May 2014 1716 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk For years I had been hearing about the Swap Meet in Hershey, PA. My personal Porsche mentor, Mark Schlachter of Metalkraft Coachwerkes in Cincinnati, had told me countless stories of his findings and adventures at the Swap Meet and the sea of Porsches that could be found cruising the lot. Finally, this year I got to attend and now know why Mark, and countless other Porsche enthusiasts, look forward to this event each and every year. A Cincinnati native and once the youngest member of the Porsche Club of America, Ohio Valley Region, Porsches have consumed my thoughts since as a youngster. I recently moved back to the Cincinnati from the Bay Area in May of 2013 after getting an MBA at The University of San Francisco. So, how did I end- up at the Hershey Swap Meet? By using my MBA in Entrepreneurial Studies in conjunction with my love of the Porsche car – I started my own Porsche parts business. I am about two months into owning my own business- The New Garage, LLC - and the perfect place to find parts, meet people, and admire beautiful cars is the Hershey Swap Meet. So, here we go! Leaving Cincinnati early Friday morning, a group of us caravanned our way up to Hershey, PA in order to be at the Swap Meet bright and early on Saturday morning. Mark, our resident Porsche aficionado spurred us on by indicating that ‘the good deals are gone when the flashlights go off”. Hence, we definitely were the early bird. Watching the vendors set-up their displays, hearing and then seeing all the numerous and varied Porsche cars arrive, and then enjoying the banter with the other Porsche car lovers only made the experience more enjoyable. The Swap Meet area at Hershey is in the middle of the Giant Center parking lot. Attendee parking is on the right side as one enters and Concourse parking is on the left. The Swap Meet area itself was fairly large, with approximately 20 rows of venders. There were three types of vendors represented. Individual vendors, people with extra parts, and manufacturers/retail vendors all displayed in this common area. Having never been to a swap meet, let alone one as famous as Hershey, I was glad that we had come early and had given ourselves plenty of time to enjoy all the sites and sounds. While walking up and down the rows of vendors, I was impressed by the rare parts that were available, many I had seen only in magazines. There were wheels a plenty with early Cups to narrow Fuchs with many Phone Dials and a set of Flat Dishes from a 928. The Restoration Design INC booth was impressive, especially with the Pink Pig Livery on a tubbed 911- very creative! May 2014 1918 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk I was surprised by how many 914 parts there were available and multiple gauge sets – both individual gauges to full clusters. There were several body panels and doors as well as bumpers. My observation of these parts may have been colored by the fact that one of my buddies was looking for 914 parts and hence, my keen interest. But, none the less, the display was impressive. The Porsche memorabilia and art was very impressive also. I thoroughly enjoyed my time digging through the old Matchbox and Hotwheels inventory, looking for toys I had when I was little. I found a few that brought back simpler times and I honestly wanted to buy them. However, my adult endeavors must be focused on larger, more useful parts, so I promised myself to come back next year for ‘toy” cars! There were some excellent posters and wall art all available throughout the swap. There was one set of 4 posters that really caught my eye. Included in this set was a 917 painting that was awesome - but a buddy of mine bought the set. I regret that one! I took a trip down memory lane when I visited the Fabspeed booth where they had their 993 RSR, a car I used to listen to on a weekly basis in high school by watching their exhaust videos. That car sounds like a monster. Porsche had a booth too, of course. Many items of clothing and almost everything from the Porsche Drivers Selection was available to view. The Swap area was interesting, well thought-out, and with a wide selection of items. Anything you could think of was in the Swap area. But, that wasn’t the only point of interest at this Hershey Swap Meet. Not only were there parts galore, there was also a plethora of Porsches surrounding your every move. Once we started driving down the main entrance, all we saw were Porsches. which was great; that is all we wanted to see. For the rest of the day, more and more kept filing in. Part of our caravan drove up in an early Lapis Blue 996 and parked behind a beautiful Carrera White 993 Carrera 4S. A few spots over was a well driven G-Series with some patina that made you want to drive that car all day long. Straight ahead was the for sale lot – we walked over and saw a nice collection. There was a 993 Carrera RS for sale, which I did not have the ware withal to confirm if it was a real RS that jumped the pond or not. A Strosek was hanging out as well. There was a 944 Turbo S with that awesome plaid interior and a whole array of Porsche models from a 914 to a Cayenne. I missed a gorgeous 993 Cab that was in the For Sale lot - I saw it on my way in and thought ‘I will get back to it’. Well, I missed it – black exterior red interior black top. Would have like to look more closely at that! We then ventured behind our parking spot to Patron Parking – Porsche only, I might add. The variation of colors of classic 911s is so entertaining. Seeing a vibrant blue on a 911T in the sunlight is something that makes you appreciate that generation of 911. Moving on we encountered an army of Guard’s Red soldiers. That, of course, was the 944 area. I am a big fan of the 944, especially Turbos. There was one particular 944 Turbo that was outstanding. The paint was in excellent shape and the car was definitely well maintained and thought out. It was sitting with the proper amount of height on two piece Cup wheels. Other than being an eye-catcher, it was completely stock. Simplicity is best sometimes. Two identical 912E’s were parked together – made me think that either they came together or this happened by some divine Porsche power. A two-tone green 924 Turbo made an appearance from 1980 and rocked every bit of it.

May 2014 2120 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk A 997 Carrera 4 GTS in Ipanema Blue Metallic was a real show stopper. Two Carrera GT’s graced the show with their presence, both GT Silver, one with black interior and one Terracotta. The sound of a Carrera GT is like nothing else and luckily I was present for a little rev session by one of the examples. Thank you for that Hershey. Moving down the line we ran into a 356 Speedster and an over-the-top pretty 356 B in white – complete with sidewalls and all. We also spotted the first 911 my friend ever drove – a G Series Cab, Carrara White with red interior, black top with Fuchs –a gorgeous car that served as the beginning of his life-long passion for Porsches. At the end of this lot we approached the Concourse area. The 928 attendance was impressive as well as the 944s and 968s. I got to see some 968s in colors I have never seen before – Speed Yellow and Riviera Blue. In this area there was an excellent showing of long hood 911s with the orange RSR at the front of the lot and the blue RSR holding up the back of the lot. Both were impressively done and shined in the daylight. A lot of pretty 993s showed up in this area too. A Guards Red 993 Turbo (can never go wrong here), a Midnight Blue C4S and a black GT2 Clone that was very well sorted. There were some great 356s too, a slammed B in bronze and another B rolling on Fuchs, a bright red C Coupe and a cream on tan Cab – this color combination on a 356 really impressed me. All in all, the Hershey Swap meet was an incredibly enjoyable experience. While the physical size of the whole show was impressive and the endless parts you could sort through was more than you could have fancied – the best part was and always will be the Porsche community. Getting together with your friends and surrounding yourselves with the very thing that brought you all together in the first place– Porsche- is joyous. Community is the real reason we all joined together for the Hershey Swap Meet. Yes, there were the tangible needs, such as a 914 passenger door but, in the end, we are all one big Porsche family excited to be around fellow enthusiasts who know our ‘affliction’. Dr. Ferdinand Porsche was quoted saying “I couldn’t find the car of my dreams so I created one myself.” Well, Dr. Porsche would be ecstatic to see that not only did he create a car for fellow dreamers but he also spawned a community that appreciate and build on his dream. It is our responsibility as Porsche enthusiasts to continue Dr. Porsche’s dream and there is no better meeting place for this than the Hershey Swap Meet. I know I will be attending next year and from here on out. – I hope to see all of you next year also! As I sit here at 3 am taking a break from study- ing,I can’t help but think about just how busy this month has been for both myself and the club. In NORPCA news, the club had a multitude of successful events this month. The new members’party kicked off the month. Unfor- tunately, I was unable to attend, but am as- sured that it went off without a hitch. I’d also like to extend a warm welcome to all the new members and I look forward to meeting you at some future events. In the middle of the month the club held a TechTalk at MAGNET (Manufacturing Advoca- cy Growth Network). The MAGNET talk led by longtime club member, car tech guru and Daytona Track Day Chief Dave Pierson. Dave gave an intriguing presentation on the uses, automotive and otherwise, of CAD programs and 3-D Printing technologies such as Polyjet and FDM. As a high school student contem- plating a career in engineering, MAGNET was a dream comes true. The possibilities of Rapid Prototyping Development are endless and amazing. The most incredible thing to my gear-headed self was that MAGNET worked hand in hand with Stoddard parts to recreate a 356 door handle so rare that the only pre- served copies were in the Porsche Museum. Not only was Dave and his team able to help recreate the handle, but they were also able to redesign a small portion of it to help en- sure better longevity. Other car related MAG- NET creations include the “turbulators” Dave created for his 944, giving him extra stability on a track like Daytona . While I was busy marveling over the automo- tive gizmos, we were duly impressed by the 3-D printed skull made from a CAT scan that was used to properly adapt a life saving skull implant. Serious stuff. The over 21 crowd also enjoyed a tour of the Cleveland Whis- key innovative production line, which was designed with the MAGNET team’s help, and some samples. To cap the event Dave’s team created 3-D printed models of Mid-Ohio and Watkins Glenn tracks that were auctioned off to ben- efit Harvest for Hunger. Everyone also re- ceived a souvenir Porsche themed shot glass produced for the event. I left with a new- found appreciation and desire for CAD and a parking ticket.Whoops. The final PCA event was the season’s first au- tocross clinic. You can find pictures online and in this issue. Personally I also had an eventful month.I finally put on my summer tires only to be greeted the next day with a bliz- zard. After the snow finally melted for good, my dad and I celebrated with a SCCA Track- day at Nelson Ledges, my first ever. NORPCA’s own Paul Radey got stuck in a car with me, but thankfully we both ended the day in one piece. He did claim I broke the record for most “BRAKE!”s he was able to get out before a stu- dent actually obeyed (8). It was great to be take part in my first track day and even better to have a trusted PCA member as my instructor. Thank you Paul. The only downside is I still need to wait an- other year to be able to participate with the PCA. Apart from taking some photos at the car control clinic the rest of my month was taken up between schoolwork and working on some redesign ideas for Voices. I imple- mented a couple this month, please let me know what you think of the changes and send me any ideas, advice, criticism, stories, event write-ups or business proposals (okay maybe that is unlikely) to VoicesFromTheTrunk@gmail.com. Before I sign off I just want to give a quick shout out to Ben Brinker of Cincinnati Ohio for writing the Hershey article this month. Ben is a recent business school grad who is working on running and creating his own Porsche parts and consignment business. Expect to hear more from him on that in the coming months and checkout his website thenewgarage.com if you get the chance. I hope to see him and the rest of you at one of the many PCA events in the coming month. If you are interested in seeing some more photos of the MAGNET event you can check out the online version of Voices in color at www.Norpca.com. You will also find there the full MAGNET presentation and additional materials. You can checkout the pictures on page 15 or online in the NORPCA Facebook group or on NORPCA.org Checkered Flag Noah Wheeler

The Gravel Trap Online Exclusive Content Past this page lies a new section for Voices; The Gravel Track. It is devoted to all those little articles that we didn’t have room for in the print version. On these next few pages you will find some high qual- ity photos, some small Porsche news tidbits and some links to a few interesting things from the world of Porsche. Let me know what you think and eventually the Gravel Trap may grow to contain much more on top of the content that spun out on the way to the printer.
