1. The primary colours used in the poster are Red, Blue and Black. These three colours usually connote a thriller/horror movie. It is more effective for them to use these colours compared to brighter colours, as dull colours such as blue and black suggest a stripped down film, which Paranormal Activity is. The name of the film is in a blood-red colour, further suggesting a supernatural thriller/horror movie. The mise-en-scene of the main image used successfully represents the film, as the whole film is set in the couples house. The time at the bottom right hand side of the image reads ‘3:08:26 AM’, telling the audience that these paranormal occurrences happen during the night. The time also tells us that it is a Faux Found Footage Film, and the image quality reiterates this. The room appears to be a conventional room, something that it ordinary. The director wants us to feel that this happened to a normal American couple, hence no over-the-top props were used in the poster. All the main characters are also presented in the poster. As the films budget was only $15,000, only two actors were needed for the movie, who are shown on the bed, fearful and pointing at the supernatural being that is haunting their house. The shadow on the door is what they’re pointing at, and this image immediately tells the audience the main narrative of the film. One of the key selling points of the film was that, at first, it was only shown in selected cinemas in the US. However, the film-makers encouraged viewers to ‘Demand It’, as shown on the bottom of the poster. The fact that it shows viewers around the world ‘Demanded it’ will make anyone else watch it out of curiosity, to see if it as scary as it seems.
