You see, the nature of High Functional Alcoholism is not that the alcoholic lives on the streets,
appears ruddy, and tears family apart. The nature of functional addicts is that they believe they
can control their drinking or they have the illusion that if they really wanted to, they can quit
anytime. They have a sense of control and they are able to manage their relationships, career,
academics and other commitments without showing any hint of addiction to people around them.
So, the hardest challenge every functional alcoholic faces is the fact that they seem to have no
tangible reason to seek treatment. They deny they have a problem, because drinking seems to be
a controllable habit…at least in the early phase of alcoholism.
As the years would go on, functional addicts will see the true nature of alcoholism in their lives.
Their alcohol tolerance increases and they have uncontrollable cravings for alcohol. Alcohol
becomes the most important reason to get up and the only pleasant reward they have in mind
while going on with their daily tasks. Slowly, alcohol abuse becomes a very strong power that
enslaves them and they cannot keep up with the demands of drinking and their commitments.
But, in the midst of rock bottom, a functional alcoholic may still live in denial.
Denial means that you do not want to accept that you have a problem and you are not willing to
do something about it. A functioning alcoholic is a slave of alcohol and the only way to get
treatment is to admit that you are addicted to it. But, accepting it is easier said than done because
you seem to be in control of your drinking and your career might be better than non-alcoholics. It
takes a great amount of humility to accept that you need help and that the only way to stop
alcoholism is to get treatment.
Alcoholism worsens with time and it follows a clear-cut path that may end in death. There is
only so much alcohol that your body can take. Your internal organs may be severely damaged
and so are your relationships and career. You don’t have to be a functional alcoholic when you
can be sober for life. At present, you may be functioning well, but living a life of freedom from
alcoholism is a greater aim that you can fulfill-if you will get treatment.
