2. Five Tips to Improve Your
Online Learning Experience
Online learning in the past decade has created a wide
variety of options for the non-traditional learner.
Undergraduate programs from Accounting to Zoology
are offered from many different colleges. In fact, in
2012, 96% of colleges offered some sort of online class.
The following are just a few tips to improve your
experience, should you choose to take an online class.

3. 1) Budget Your Study Time
This is extremely important. Most online classes are
accelerated, condensed versions of full semester
courses. The developers have taken the information
and pushed it into a six or eight week time frame. This
means that you as a students should take some time
and plan out when you will study. This is crucial,
otherwise you may end up falling behind right away,
due to lack planning.

4. 2) Order That Book!
Order your textbook as soon as you know for
sure what courses you will be taking. This is
absolutely critical to your success. If you do not
have your book before the class starts, you will
fall woefully behind within a week or two.

5. 3) Talk to the Teacher
Contacting your instructor before the class begins is a
good idea. You should introduce yourself, as well as ask
any questions you might have--such as what textbook is
required for the course and where you can locate the
syllabus. Keeping the lines of communication open with
your instructor is very helpful, because they are a key
component to your success.

6. 4) Participate & Collaborate
Don't try to disappear! That's no fun, and
certainly won't help you get a good grade.
Participation in group discussions and
collaboration on assignments will boost your
comfort level in the online classroom, thus
enabling you to better complete your
homework.

7. 5) Speak Up!
Remember how we said to keep the lines of
communication open with your instructor? This is why.
If you have any questions or concerns throughout the
duration of your online class, your instructor is there
for you. A simple clarification from your instructor
about an assignment can reduce your anxiety and
increase your confidence in your ability to succeed.

8. Persevere
Being a student in any setting can be
challenging. Online classes take a lot of selfdiscipline and time management. If you follow
