What is Learner Experience Design
(LXD)?
• LXD is the application of UX principles of usefulness,
usability and desirability to the learning activity.
• It is about designing a UI which supports and enhances
learning outcomes.
• It keeps learners at the centre of the experience and all the
cognitive elements are designed to enhance the learner’s
retention and application of the concepts.

Usability in E-Learning-
The Second Principle of LXD
For example:
A course on “Effective Prospecting Skills” might be very
useful to the sales employees but if it is lacking on the
usability factor, the learners may not be compelled to
complete the course.
Usability is how well the e-learning course or module
serves the purpose with which it was designed. It mainly
refers to the quality of experience which the e-learning
content gives.

Elements of Usability in LXD
• Memorability - How well the learner has been able to
retain and recall the concepts which were explained in
the e-learning course.
• Simplicity- The ease with which a learner can
understand the e-learning course i.e. the use of UI and
visual design to explain the information/concept.

Except for the element of satisfaction other elements can
be categorically defined and worked around while
designing a learning experience.
• The ease with which the learner can figure
out how to use the e-learning course for the
first time like navigation
• (start/stop/next/menu/audio/progress bars /
glossary/sub topics), information or
concepts, input fields
• ( name, department, email id etc).
Learnability
• The pleasure which the learner derives from
the e-learning course. Satisfaction

Tips to make your E-Learning Usable
• Step in the shoes of the learners. See the e-learning
course the way they will see it(layouts, navigation,
information flow) .
• Analyse if all the e-learning elements are as simple as
possible. This avoids putting cognitive load on the learner.
(like avoid using excessive layers/pop-ups /navigation style
which takes a learner back and forth).
• Make use of elements which can simplify the concepts to a
learners and engage them (like storyboards, virtual agents
use of relevant imagery etc.)

Tips to make your E-Learning Usable
Contd.
• Design Interfaces which simplify and ease out the learning
process.
• Build a usable prototype of e-learning course and test it
within a small group of learners who can give you meaningful
feedback on all aspects of usability except satisfaction.
The Second Principle of LXD is “Make your E-Learning
Usable. As the saying goes Build the right thing, then build
the thing right.”
