2. WHAT’S THIS ALL ABOUT?
Venice is a city in north-eastern Italy which is actually made up of 118 small islands
separated by canals and linked by bridges. It is the world’s only pedestrian city, it is
easily walkable and the absence of cars makes it a pleasant experience. You’ll be
surprised at how quickly you can explore the Venetian labyrinth with a little bit of know
how.
However if you want to get around more quickly, there are numerous vaporetti and
water taxis to take you up and down the canals.
First time visitors will arrive in Venice with great expectations and the stunning
architecture in the Piazza San Marco. The monuments in the main square draw large
crowds and a top tip is to buy the Museum Pass to access all city-owned museums in
Venice.
Even at peak visitor times, you are never more than a bridge away from secret campi,
gothic palazzo and lively wine bars. No matter what the season, Venice’s churches and
museums offer historical charm aplenty but there is a growing contemporary art scene
also.
3. ATTRACTIONS
We’ve selected our top 5 things to see and do in Venice:
Saint Mark’s Basilica: The most famous of Venice’s churches, Saint Mark’s Basilica is an architectural
wonder. You cannot truly appreciate the beauty until you have witnessed the gold ceilings first hand.
Doge’s Palace: The Gothic Palazzo Ducale was the seat of Venice’s government for seven centuries and
also contains a prison – one which the notorious Casanova escaped from!
Gondola ride: Take a romantic or scenic gondola ride down the canals of Venice to views you can’t get from
anywhere. Book in advance or pay on the day, gondolas can carry from 2 to 6 people.
Teatro La Fenice: The Teatro La Fenic is one of the most renowned landmarks in the history of Italian
theatre. You can visit the theatre itself or, if you want to do something spectacular, watch an opera.
Venetian islands: Explore the three Venice Islands, Murano, Torcello and Burano - famous for their glass-
making and lace –, by boat for a day trip away from the cities hustle and bustle.

summer heat.
If you are planning on visiting any religious sights, particularly Saint Mark’s
