Good morning, my name is Thanasis Iatrou, I am the President & CEO of Media Excel, a video Transcoding Company for Mobile TV. The Mobile TV market will experience explosive growth in the next 5 years and we see some great challenges in distributing video and audio content to an ever increasing number of mobile devices. We believe strongly that transcoding can resolve some of these challenges and we would like to tell you how Media Excel is addressing these today with our unique hardware technology, who is using our appliances and how transcoding will be gradually deployed within the network.
The key challenge we see for all industry participants is re-purposing content that is created originally for mainstream TV networks, DVDs or by Users themselves and broadcasting it to a myriad of new, portable devices ranging from small size cell phones, to larger PDAs, all the way to Notebooks. Invariably these devices can only play a certain video file based on the video codec they incorporate. Video needs to be re-repurposed to be successfully displayed in these devices, since the devices themselves do not have enough processing power to do this task. Video needs to be A. TRANSCODED, that is the art of changing video & audio codec to match the particular device and B. TRANSRATED, that is to change resolution of a certain codec so that it fits certain screen sizes. There is also the task of multiplexing and shaping the broadcasted streams so that there bandwidth savings for the broadcaster, that is called NETWORK SHAPING. Our technology enables all these functions to take place for real-time conversion and the output can be broadcasted or stored for later use in a VoD system.
Who uses our products? Media Companies are using our transcoders for accelerated off-line file re-purposing. Mobile TV companies are using our products for real-time broadcasting and Networking companies are creating last mile implementation with our transcoders.
Here is a an example of a Real Customer that is using our transcoding devices to ingest Cable or Satellite based channels and in real time out of each incoming channel produce 20 simultaneous streams of different codecs and resolutions to satisfy the demand of the various devices in the field. Parameters such as bit-rate, frame rate, and codec can vary for each video and audio stream and our device provides an easy, intuitive way to the Broadcaster to set these as per the network needs. At the same time, the output is “network shared” so that the outgoing stream is constant in terms of bit-rate to provide great bandwidth savings.
WHY USE OUR TRANSCODERS FOR OFF-LINE TRANSCODING? Is nt an overkill?? Well, we provide 6-10x the speed of any Software based system that runs on an Intel or AMD based server. Let me repeat: 6-10x, and when calculating the associated space and power costs, we provide a significantly lower Total Cost of Ownership. The more content you need to transcode the more you save with our appliances. Here is an example on file transcoding: Here we calculated how many of our Hardware appliances a customer would use to transcode 20 files in 10 different versions in Real time, vs Software based systems. The benefits are obvious!
How do we do all this? We developed IN-HOUSE all the necessary software and hardware components (codecs, muxers, remote management and fail-over software, even the DSP boards and software drivers themselves). This gives us a unique advantage to control all this technology in a native way at source code level and provide ultimate flexibility and great video quality to our customers. Our appliances are compatible with all Mobile, PC and Broadcasting Network standards and so they are easy to integrate.
And we believe in providing GREAT VALUE in terms of hardware. We provide the MOST DENSE solution in the industry with a Price / Performance factor that would make traditional video vendors to blush. Every appliance packs the power of multiple decoders, including the IPTV industry’s favorite MPEG2 decoder, 3-4 Full SD encoders, a stat mux and in Q4 we will include an ad insertion capability. Why ad insertion?
We believe that the Mobile TV industry will gradually deploy a 3-level network topology, similar to existing topologies for the Cable industry. This will ensure that local TV broadcasters will include their content in Mobile TV networks and that QoS will improve by bringing transcoding closer to the individual device demands. The increasing need for Localized and Personalized Ads will require ad insertion at all levels and it makes great technology and business sense to do this at the time of transcoding so that the stream is not manipulated and encoded twice.
As a closing remark, I would encourage you to read IDC’s recent repott on the importance of Transcoding in the Video and Media Market. I read Idarose’s quote: “””””””””””””. Please come visit us at the South U booth 13507. Thank you for you time.
