• Who is your piece aimed at and what will they

• Which less obvious groups might get something

• What kind of publication would you imagine it
would appear in and what kind of readership
does it attract?
• Why is it important that such a readership hear
your ideas?
4. What is it you intend your audience to
understand as a result of reading your
piece?
• What opinions are you trying to change?
• What might someone learn from reading your
piece?
• What dilemma have you revealed?
5. How does your piece show an understanding of
Encountering Conflict and the prompt?
• Is there an idea commonly associated with
conflict that you have tried to over turn?
• Have you identified a dilemma that makes
your issue particularly difficult to resolve?
• What is your opinion on the topic now you
have done some research?
• Are there any opinions that you differ with?
6. What choices did you make in terms of vocabulary,
punctuation and language techniques to best suit
your intentions?
• Why did you choose compare contrast instead of
cause and effect, or visa versa?
• What is it about the structure of your essay that
makes it expository? Have you created an issue to
explore? Is your piece impartial and academic and
based on research material? Have you used cause
and effect or compare contrast?
• How did you use language to make it clear that you
were not trying to persuade your audience but
rather present and logical conclusion based on the
evidence? E.g. ‘Based on the evidence it seems ...’

• You don’t need to address every question that
has been raised in this presentation
• Choose a couple of questions for each section of
your SOE and be concise
• This is designed to show us that you have
deliberately used some writing techniques and
not others
• This happens naturally when you write with a
particular audience in mind so make sure you
have a very clear idea who that is
