UAE CONSTRUCTION & REAL ESTATE NEWS
UAE to add nearly 32,000 new hotel rooms
he UAE hospitality industry will continue to see addition of more hotels over the next four
years, with the Emirates adding 120 hotels and nearly 32,000 rooms to cater to the
growing number of guests.
Research firm Business Monitor International said it’s highly optimistic about the UAE's tourism
industry as the country is planning significant increases in the national hotel room supply, while
airport capacity is also set to increase rapidly.
According to BMI statistics, the UAE hospitality sector looks set to grow in tandem with tourist
arrivals with an extra 120 hotels and accommodation establishments to be built by 2018. This will
equate to about 31,810 extra rooms for the overall national supply, reflecting the large size of
many new hotels currently under construction across the emirates.
A number of new hotel development projects will be announced during the Arabian Travel
Market (ATM) being held in Dubai next week. The 21st edition of ATM will be held at the Dubai
International Convention and Exhibition Centre from May 5 to 8 with participation of more than
2,500 exhibitors receiving 21,000 trade visitors.
Major projects under construction in the UAE include Madinat Jumeirah’s Phase Four extension,
which is scheduled for completion in 2016; 667-room Millennium Bab Al Qasr hotel in Abu Dhabi,
which is slated to open in the second quarter of next year; 753-room Damac Towers by
Paramount will open by the end of 2016; 863-room The Westin Dubai, part of Habtoor Palace;
and 474-room Sheraton Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road.
Occupancy rates, according to BMI, will also remain strong, above 70 per cent across its forecast
period to 2018 and underlining the strong demand for accommodation in the UAE.
STR Global’s statistics showed the UAE hotel occupancy rate increased 1.1 per cent to 84 per cent
in March 2014 as against same month last year while revenues per average room (RevPar) also
rose 0.9 per cent to Dh732.67.
“For 2014, we forecast 8.3 per cent growth
in arrivals from all regions, with tourism
receipts set to rise by around 9.4 per cent
in US dollar terms,” it said.
Looking at inbound tourism flows to the UAE by region, the Middle East looks set to remain the
largest single source market, with its share of total arrivals set to remain stable around 30 per
cent.
“Taking a greater market share over our forecast period is the Asia Pacific region, with arrivals set
to rise from 2.9 million in 2014 to 4 million in 2018. This reflects the growing wealth of Asia,
coupled with increased business travel and significant numbers of expatriate workers coming to
UAE from nations such as India and Pakistan. China also is expected to prove an increasingly
important source market for inbound tourism,” BMI said.

Dubai to spend $1.63bn transform emirate into
'green paradise' by 2025
Dubai Municipality is planning to spend AED6bn ($1.63bn) to transform the Emirate into a "green
paradise" by 2025. The massive investment has been earmarked for soft landscaping and the
irrigation network in Dubai, according to officials.
"We have plans for giant projects by 2025, which include the expansion of sewer lines and the
irrigation network," said Salah Abdul Rahman Amiri, assistant director-general of the Municipality
in comments published by news agency WAM.
"These are mainly concentrated on preparations for Expo 2020 as we want to make Dubai a
green paradise," Amiri said, adding, that new legislation is also being planned to ensure that
developers share the onus of expanding the green belt in the city.
Amiri said over AED3bn would be spent on improving and expanding the irrigation network by
2025, which would bolster the landscaping projects.
"We are having problems with sustainable landscaping. The challenge is mainly with water," he
was quoted as saying.
Around 45mn plants were planted in 2013 and the Municipality is expecting a five to 10%
increase, depending on upcoming projects, the report said. Up to 30 small park projects are in
the pipeline to add to the green lungs of the desert city which currently boasts about 7,000
hectares of green space.

New projects boost demand for steel products in
UAE
New construction projects in the UAE have boosted demand for the steel products in the
country, according to private steel products manufacturer Conares.
"The steady rise in construction, with the announcement of major landmark projects in the UAE,
has given way to a boom in the steel industry," said Bharat Bhatia, CEO of Conares.
"The huge growth in the steel industry is a result of several factors, the primary reason being the
new developments and announcements of new projects here.
Further, the high-demand has also led most construction companies, developers and traders to
turn to local producers, as imports of debars normally takes a minimum of 60 days to arrive in
Dubai.
"Furthermore, UAE financial institutes are very positive to support the steel industry
which itself is good sign for the entire industry and future developments. Local
producers are able to offer internationally competitive costs. That, coupled with the
reliability of delivery locally, which is far better and easier compared to imports from
outside UAE, have added immensely to the growth of the sector in the region," he added.
Conares has an annual production capacity of over 750,000 metric tonnes, including 500,000
metric tonnes of rebar, and 250,000 metric tonnes of ERW pipe and 36,000 metric tonnes of
galvanized pipes at its Jebel Ali facility in Dubai.
UAE-based steel products manufacturer Conares output has increased double-digit in the first
quarter of 2014, reaching nearly 100,000 metric tonnes rebars.
The company said in a statement that the first quarter volume is almost equivalent to 50 per cent
of the last year's total tonnage
Total sales of Conares steel products has surged by 25 per cent sales as of the end of 2013. Profit
of the business also registered significant growth of 45 per cent in 2013, compared to the same
period in 2012.
