The document discusses disaster preparedness and lessons learned from hurricanes Frances and Jeanne hitting Florida's Treasure Coast in 2004. It outlines the importance of having an action plan in place to keep employees safe and informed, serve readers with important information, and help local businesses recover in order to serve the community. The publishing company learned they need priorities in place, secure locations identified, supplies stocked, and communication alternatives planned to continue delivering news without interruption during disasters.
5. On September 25, 2004 Frances, a category 3 hurricane
made landfall on Florida’s Treasure Coast.
Three weeks later, Jeanne, also a category 3 hurricane,
made landfall in nearly the exact same location.

Thank you Paul. As Paul said, my name is Andy Anderson and I’m here to share my experience of the 2004 hurricane season. Before I go on, have any of you been involved with a similar crisis? From what I understand, this area is at risk of tornadoes or earthquakes...personally, I would prefer hurricanes!\n

If you notice Jeanne’s path, it looked as though she was heading out to sea. The u-turn she made was due to me taking my hurricane shutters down. I would like to take a moment now to share some images captured by our brave and talented photo journalists.\n

This facility was built to withstand winds up to 200 mph. Unfortunately, it failed to stand up against Frances’ winds of 165 mph. Behind the tarp is our brand new press (mostly electronic). Fortunately, we were able to have the building repaired....\n
Just in time for hurricane Jeanne to take out the other side.\n

When the power goes out, TV becomes useless and radio is a non-visual medium. Residents will have a thirst for information and may risk their safety by venturing out. Feed their thirst and they will thank you for it.\n
