estimated that 3D printing will be a $5.2 billion dollar industry by the year 2020. But what exactly is 3D

3D printing is a form of additive manufacturing technology where a three dimensional object is created
by laying down successive layers from a digital model. 3D printing is also known as additive
manufacturing based on the process. This type of printing is achieved using an additive process where
successive layers of materials are laid down in different shapes. 3D printing is different from the
traditional machining techniques as the latter one is mostly based on a subtractive process – removal of

Chuck Hull, of 3D Systems Corp. is the one who created the first 3D printer in 1984. This printing is
usually done by a materials printer using digital technology. It was initially used in many fields like
jewelry, footwear, engineering and construction (AEC), architecture, industrial design, dental and
medical industries, education, geographic information systems and others. But there has been large
scale adoption of these 3D printing machines since the start of the 21st century and hence the prices
have been reduced considerably.
One can imagine the tremendous possibilities that the 3D printing can bring about in pretty much any
industry. For example, the “ Bionic E ar ” is a 3D printed ear developed by scientists in Princeton can
supposedly hear better than the normal human ear.
