Representation Analysis
Task 4
THOMAS SMITH
Impression, Representation and Social Groups
 Dr Dre is represented as a legend in hip hop.
 The impression that is created by the magazine is very positive. They
make people feel he is a good man and he has returned to make
music and continue to change the music industry.
 The male gender is mainly represented in this magazine since hip-hop is
male dominated (with a bunch of female artists started to emerge.)
 The age group that has been represented is probably around late
teens to adult.
 The ethnicities that is represented are Black/White/English/American.
 Dr Dre’s body language and mid-shot give the impression and
representation that you do not want to mess around with him or he will
deal with you and that he is powerful physically and musically.

Analysis
Language, Images, Font and Colour.
 The language suggests Dr Dre is a detox. Detoxification is the removal
of poisonous substances from the body. This must mean Dre is removing
the bad stuff out of hip-hop?
 There is only one image and that is Dr Dre himself dressed in black with
a chess board.
 The font is serif in bold. This is used to catch the eye of the reader so the
read about Dr Dre as if he is making a statement. Notice the lack of
text yet Dr Dre’s part is the largest. This shows he is the headline of the
magazine and he is a big thing.
 The usage of dark colours (black and grey) connote evil.

Double Page Spread
 The double page spread gives a happier vibe compared
to the cover page. Although there is virtually no colour to
the image, the artist looks like he is happy and
celebrating something.
 Use of bold-serif font.
 Use of the black and white mid-shot.
 Although colourless, the background is bright which
connotes happiness and no negativity unlike the Dr Dre
front cover.
 Represented as a successful artist – ‘With a 15 year
career under his belt, a fourth solo album in stores and a
third one with his group, The Lox, on the way. Styles P is
doing something rare in rap, growing old gracefully.’ This
quote suggests he is hard working and has had a long
career in what he does.
