Software as a service commonly referred to as SaaS is a
methodology used in deploying software nowadays. In
this methodology applications are hosted online by their
providers and users access them from there. Many
software providers have taken up this method. Instead of
selling software as a package SaaS solutions require that
they only sell the rights to access it online.
There are certain characteristics that a system must meet
to be considered as a solution. One of the characteristics is
the method of access. The software must be network
based and manageable from a hub. Users connect to the
system via the internet. They have unique user names and
views. The system can be accessed simultaneously but
every user has his own different view even when using the
                        same tools.
This model of deploying software has many advantages.
One advantage is being affordable. Costs incurred in
buying the software are not there. Instead monthly
subscriptions are purchased and they are not as
        expensive. The subscriptions come with
     maintenance, customer support and upgrades.
Another advantage is that the system is quick to deploy.
The only thing you need is access to internet and a web
browser. This is unlike traditional systems which needed
months to set up. Another advantage of software as a
service is that it requires no infrastructure. Complexity of
the underlying infrastructure is dealt with by the vendor.
The user does not need to think about hardware
          maintenance and the operating system.
Another benefit is seamless upgrades. The user does not
need to download any patches. Instead all the updates
and upgrades for the system are done by the vendor.
You will also get levels of service that are guaranteed.
With traditional software performance was not
guaranteed. But with software as a service there is a
guarantee of availability of up to 99%. In the case that the
provider fails to provide his service there are penalties.
Other benefits include the ability to work from anywhere
and having back-ups done for you. saas solutions are
                  therefore the way to go.
