1. Evaluation Question 1: In what ways
does your media product use,
develop or challenge forms and
conventions of real media products?
2. Trailer
After researching existing professional logos, I made this one on
photoshop and used final cut to make it rotate. I found in the
trailers of the same genre they were generally a little way in but
not right at the beginning or in the middle of the trailer. So for
my trailer I chose to have the logos in around the same time
frame.
3. The mise – en – scene conforms to the generic
conventions of a horror- thriller. For example I used a
deserted places such as industrial estates and fields,
that you would expect in a zombie thriller. Many films
like this are shot either in the dark or dusk, I chose to
film mine just before dark and one a dingy misty day, as
this gave a good effect and gave the trailer the thrill it
needed. I used dirt on the main protagonist to show she
has been in the wilderness for a long time. I also used
fake blood on the zombies to give the zombie vibe and
make it a like more ‘dark’ that the horror genre holds.
My trailer flicks between the protagonist and the
antagonists in various places, and shows the fright of
the protagonist when she realises she’s not the only
‘survivor’ that the antagonists are there also. This
conforms to real media as there is always the
protagonist/antagonist relationship.
4. I have used a range of shots in my trailer to
satisfy the conventions of my chosen genre.
Some are close-ups, mid-shots, long shots,
panning shots etc. I also included intertitles as I
felt these helped build suspense for my audience
to get them on the edge of their seat, I also felt
is gave away little parts of the narrative and
worked well in a teaser trailer.
5. A normal convention for a film campaign is continuity, I have used this in mine as I have
used the same font for my film title on both the magazine cover and poster, and not
only for the film title in the trailer but for all of my intertitles. I feel by doing this it adds
to the professionalism of my products, as this is stereotypical for this sort of campaign.
It also satisfies my audience as they are recognisable as products of the same film.
6. Print Products
When looking at these professional compared to my product, you can see that you can
tell that my magazine conforms to conventions of mainstream products, they all use a
main image, that has sell lines framing it, they all each have a skyline, with the
masthead placed below. Also mine and the Harry Potter cover both have the film title
placed at the bottom, above the puff.
I feel having a lot of sell lines makes the readers feel they are getting value for money. I
also feel that this cover will appeal to my audience.
7. Although on the compared professional products the imagery is different, I still
feel my poster conforms the conventions of a film poster of this genre, they all
have the film title placed in the lower third of the product. ‘Scary’ imagery is used
my product contains a darkened image with my models in the menacing poses
and covered in blood, and the others contained a head and zombies also covered
in blood. They all have their credits placed at the bottom of the poster, and they
aren’t clear to see unless you really study the poster, this is stereotypical for most
film posters of any genre. They all also have something along the top third, on
mine it’s a review the same as ‘City of the Living Dead’. Whereas ‘Reel Zombies’
has a tag line for the film.
