3. Jeev Jagat Protein poem 3
One of the four famous bio macromolecules
constituting virtually the very foundation of life
found universally in all organisms in cells full of life
the most abundant organic molecule world wide
Cooked egg white and curdled milk appeared
quite similar to people even in Roman days;
A couple of century ago it was also observed that
“animal substance”& “wheat flour” were almost same
A basic requirement even as nutrient of all
it was named Protein “the first or foremost” of all
its empirical formula was found in all the same
its importance recognized serious studies began
Synthesized in each living cell step by step
by transcription of genes in the nucleus of cell
and translation of mRNA in its cytoplasm
as polypeptide by the wonderful Ribose in all
Well known as a large and complex molecule
it starts as a chain of simple amino acids all small
arranged in a sequence prescribed by genes codons
and bound with each other by peptide bonds

The simplicity , however , does not last long
its processing begins soon & changes it all
by addition of side chains in particular in such a way
that makes each residue special in its own way.
Its nascent primary form is naturally inclined
to fold and assume a different conformation or form
and thus four levels of form could be easily achieved
Primary –linear ,Secondary – Alpha Helix & Beta sheet ,
Tertiary and quaternary 3D forms so called.
Its shape and structure determine its functions
it is unique in having autonomous domains
associating mutually with various forces & bonds
capable of acting individually or in common.
Each having motifs for attachment as active sites
it can and actually reacts with all kinds of other molecules
in fact in its various types and forms it participates
in almost all essential functions life necessitates

From birth to death at all stages of life
protein deals with situations off and on
growth & development ,reproduction, response
respiration ,communication , defense and so on .
In animals it contributes blood and bones
along with of course muscles , hairs & nails
ligaments ,feathers .beaks and horns
as muscle fibers , keratins ,collagens & so on
Similarly it assures & assists plants and others
like algae, in maintaining their shape and structure
as various structural proteins in their cell walls
such as Extensins etc of five or even more forms .
As enzymes proteins catalyze a host of reactions
in photosynthesis ,respiration and uncountable others
as polymerases and transcription factors they
play principle role in gene transcription and expression
In cell cycle they form spindle
and play beautiful role as microtubules
infact cell division wont be possible
without their assistance & regulatory roles
6. Jeev jagat 6
Their most interesting role is ,however,
perhaps as molecular motor machines
sliding smoothly over microtubular rails !
transporting a load of cargo in or out of cells
Perhaps some of the most exciting activities are
ribosomes moving with great speed along m RNAs
and microtubules assembly and disassembly scenes
combining speed with beautiful style and patterns
As Hormones they act as messenger molecules
acting as signals in long distance communication
That apart they make complexes with pigments in plants
and are as such responsible for many reactions & responses
As bio clock they tick inside every body
day in and day out merrily counting time
and enable organisms to timely recognize
changes in environment , adjust & respond
As nutrients they are of course
the ultimate source of sustenance
and strength in all kingdoms of life
It is in coats of protein that viruses thrive .

As Immunoglobins they rush to protect us all
like ‘devdoots ’from attacking pathogens all
But as signals for apoptosis they surely in all
Act as ‘Yamdoots’ ensuring death once for all.
