1. Organize Your Storage Unit
Many Americans have begun utilizing storage units as a way to free up
more space in their home. Unused furniture, seasonal clothing,
appliances and decorations are stored to be accessed only when
needed. For many of us, the time we allocate to spend dropping off,
picking up, and organizing things at our storage unit is minimal.
If time is short items get dropped off in a hurry and are stacked on top
of whatever is in front. Then, when you have to find something later,
you have to climb, dig, and spend a frustrating amount of time
searching for what you need in the disorganized chaos. By following a
few simple tips, you can optimize the space of your unit as well as the
time you spend there.
Packing
Organization begins with how you pack the items you intend to store. First, select only one size of
storage container to use, preferably plastic as they protect against mold and critters better than
cardboard. Also, clear plastic isn’t a bad idea so you can see into the boxes. Pack only like items into
each box; decorations with decorations and winter clothes with winter clothes, etc.
Clearly label each box with a sharpie. You may also choose to purchase white stickered labels instead of
writing directly on the box. Before sealing the boxes, you might want to consider placing a moisture
absorber into the box for an added level of protection against mold and mildew. As for furniture and
accessories, you may choose to wrap them in plastic and you want to make sure that all the pieces are
attached in some way.
Plan Your Space
Once your boxes and other items are ready to go and you have an idea of how much space you will
need, you can take a look at what size unit you will need. Ideally for long term storage
solutions you want to place shelving in the space that will allow you to access each box
easily.
Place the shelving along one wall and furniture along the opposing wall. Leave an aisle
between so that you can easily get to any of the boxes on the shelves. Place heavier items
closer to the floor and then stack lighter boxes on top or on higher shelves. When you can
2. spare the space, leave some wiggle room between your boxes and other items for easier access.
If you cannot afford to have an aisle, plan for one anyway and then place lighter furniture items and
easily moved boxes in the aisle so you can move them quickly when you need to access the items at the
back of your storage unit.
An optimized and organized storage space is the best way to create more in-home space while still
having easy access to a nearby space for items you only need on a seasonal or irregular basis. Whether
