This presentation was prepared by Sakshi Gupta from SCT Institute of Technology, Bangalore. The presentation discusses about how we can save energy in our daily to daily life with small measures.
2. Energy crisis arises due to crippled supply of energy resources to an
economy.
Save energy save electricity tariff save fossil fuels for posterity
save environment
Energy conservation is now at consumers finger tips with multiple
options available at every level of energy usage.
3. Turn off lights when not in use.
Take advantage of daylight by using light-colored, loose-
weave curtains on your windows.
Allow daylight to penetrate the room.
Paint the walls with lighter colors that reflect daylight.
clean lighting fixtures to maintain illumination.
CFL bulbs are four times more energy efficient than
incandescent bulbs. One CFL can reduce 260 pounds of
carbon dioxide per year.
Replace conventional regulators with electronic regulators
for ceiling fans.
Install exhaust fans at a higher elevation than ceiling fans.
4. Don't open the oven door too often to check food
condition as each opening leads to a temperature drop of
25 C.
When cooking on a gas burner, use moderate flame
settings to conserve LPG. A blue flame in a gas burner
means gas stove is operating efficiently, Yellowish flame
is an indicator that the burner needs cleaning.
Use pressure cookers as much as possible because food
cooks faster with the pressure of steam. Cook food with
the right amount of water to save on gas as more water
uses up more gas .
Use lids to cover the pans while cooking.
5. Leave enough space between the refrigerator and walls so that
air can easily circulate around the refrigerator.
Make sure refrigerator door seals are airtight.
Cover liquids and wrap foods stored in the refrigerator.
Uncovered foods release moisture.
Do not open the doors of the refrigerators frequently.
Do not leave the fridge door open for longer than necessary,
as cold air will escape.
Avoid putting hot or warm food straight into the fridge.
Don’t keep food stuff straight on gas stove when taken out of
the refrigerator. Bring it to room temperature first
to save on energy consumed .
6. Always wash only with full loads.
Use optimal quantity of water.
Use timer facility to save energy.
Use the correct amount of detergent.
Use hot water only for very dirty clothes.
Always use cold water in the rinse cycle.
Prefer natural drying over electric dryers.
7. Prefer air conditioners having automatic temperature cut off.
Operate the ceiling fan in conjunction with the window air
conditioner to spread the cooled air more effectively
throughout the room .
Seal the doors and windows properly & a roof garden can
reduce the load on Air Conditioner.
Don't place lamps or TV sets near the air-conditioner. The
thermostat senses heat from these appliances, which can
cause the air conditioner to run longer than necessary.
Plant trees to shade AC units but not to block the airflow. A
unit operating in the shade uses as much as 10% less
electricity.
8. In developing an energy conservation plan for home, identify
the problem areas where energy is being lost or inefficiently
used; prioritize the problem areas according to the extent of
energy wastage and systematically correct the prioritized
problems. We must all conserve energy and use it efficiently .
All energy sources have an impact on the environment.
Concerns about the greenhouse effect and global warming, air
pollution, and energy security have led to increasing interest
and more development in renewable energy sources .
