Saving lives of mothers and
babies
Photo journey of exposure visit, Mewat, Haryana
2. USAID Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems
Background of the photo journey
• The USAID ASSIST project has spread its wings to work with the Meos
(scheduled tribe) residing in the Mewat district in Haryana. The Meos
have several problems related to women’s reproductive health.
Religious and cultural norms preclude women from accessing antenatal,
intrapartum and post- partum care.
• The project started to support communities and front line health
workers to use quality improvement methods to achieve better antenatal
and intrapartum care.
• The Quality Improvement team composed of ANM, ASHA[1] , AWW[2] ,
and member from women’s group engaged in several activities
including home counselling visits of pregnant women by ASHA,
monthly meeting and group meetings for pregnant women, Village
Health Nutrition Day etc.

3. USAID Applying Science to Strengthen and Improve Systems
Background of the photo journey
• While working on this, the team observed that in Salaheri village fewer
than 20% of women went to the facility to deliver. Pregnant women were
reluctant to opt for institutional deliveries despite several counselling
sessions provided to them because it was rumoured that male doctors
delivered babies, and doctors and nurses did not behave well with
patients.
• To explain the truth to the community and establish rapport with service
provider an exposure visit to Nuh , Community Health Centre, was
arranged to resolve both issues by QI members.
