Drones are also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and they do not have any
human pilot on board. The drones are controlled either by a computer or by a pilot from
ground. This is the latest breakthrough in innovation. Drone tech is ever evolving; apart
from the usage for military purposes it is being used for a number of things such as
atmospheric research, disaster relief etc. There are a number of applications in which
drones will be useful. Some of them are listed below:
 Monitoring Highways: According to data, there are 4 million miles of highways stretching in the USA. It
has become extremely difficult to watch over them and a lot of manpower is required. There is a project
being carried out where the use of drone tech is being studied for inspection of roads and highways.
These drones are also being used to survey lands, notify officials in case of traffic jams and accidents.
Recently this project received a $75,000 grant from Federal Highway Administration and Georgia
Department of Transportation.
 Hurricane Search: As the drones are unmanned, they can be used to study storms and hurricanes as there
is no risk involved. Researchers re using it to study the patterns of the storm by sending these drones in
the midst of an ongoing hurricane or storm. NASA, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) and Northrop Grumman have all joined hands on a $30 million experiment that is to last 3 years
and use UAV to spy the storms. This will help to learn about how hurricanes evolve. The drones used in
this program have the capacity to keep flaying for 30 hours while cover a distance of 11,000 miles. The

those areas where manned flights are unreachable. The data gathered by such drones helps scientists to
learn and understand storms and hurricanes.
 Search and Rescue: Automobile accident victims are sometimes are not located even after ground and air
searches. In such cases drones can be very useful. Search and Rescue operations are usually time
consuming as well as expensive and even life threatening. Therefore, in order to eliminate these
shortcomings, drones are useful. Being unmanned, there is no risk involved and thus they can complete
the tasks easily.
The above listed uses and applications have drastically changed the scenario of every
field. Today, researchers are looking to introduce drones for variety of purposes in order
to provide easy living and better services. Thus one can see that drones are useful not
just for picking and dropping parcels, but instead they can be used in versatile settings
and therefore they are a good alternative. Also, the companies that utilize drones make
sure that more research is carried out in order make drones a part of our lives.
