11. Teaching of the Catholic Church
CCC 1030 & 1031
The CCC defines “PURGATORY” as a FINAL PURIFICATION,
So as to ACHIEVE the HOLINESS necessary,
To ENTER the JOY of HEAVEN,
Which is EXPERIENCED by those,
who DIE in GOD’s GRACE and FRIENDSHIP,
But still IMPERFECTLY PURIFIED.
PURGATORY
11
12. Why they are called Poor & Holy Souls?
• They are called “POOR” because they CANNOT PRAY for
THEMSELVES.
• They must RELY entirely on OTHERS to PRAY and make SACRIFICES on
their behalf.
• They are called “HOLY” because the SOULS in PURGATORY can NO
LONGER SIN
• They are already SAVED(NOT PURIFIED) and know they are awaiting
the FULLNESS and the PRESENCE of GOD.
12
26. Teaching of the Catholic Church
CCC 1033
Which souls go to Hell?
The SOULS which go to HELL are those who :
a) DIE in MORTAL SIN without Repenting
b) And accepting GOD’s MERCIFUL LOVE.

27. Vision of Purgatory from Saint Faustina Kowalska
• “I saw my guardian angel, who ordered me to follow him.
• In a moment I was in a misty place full of fire in which there was a great crowd of suffering souls.
• They were praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves;
• only we can come to their aid.
• The flames, which were burning them, did not touch me at all.
• My guardian angel did not leave me for an instant.
• I asked these souls what their greatest suffering was.
• They answered me in one voice that their greatest torment was longing for God.
• “I saw Our Lady visiting the souls in purgatory.
• The souls call her ‘The Star of the Sea.’
• She brings them refreshment.
• I wanted to talk with them some more, but my guardian angel beckoned me to leave.
• We went out of that prison of suffering.
• [I heard an interior voice, which said] ‘My mercy does not want this, but justice demands it.
• Since that time I am in closer communion with the suffering souls.’
(Diary of St. Faustina 20)
27
28. Jesus appears to St. Catherine of Siena
• The FIRE BURNS WITHOUT CONSUMING,
• For the SOUL CANNOT be CONSUMED,
• Since it is NOT MATERIAL.
• But SPIRITUAL
• But in my DIVINE JUSTICE,
• I ALLOW FIRE TO BURN these SOULS,
• MIGHTLY, TORMENTING them WITHOUT CONSUMING them.
• And the TREMENDOUS PAIN of this TORTUOUS BURNING
has MANY FORMS,
• As the FORMS OF THEIR SINS,
• And is MORE OR LESS SEVERE IN PROPORTION OF THEIR
SINS.

29
30. How do we know that they are Holy Souls from Purgatory
• They are NON DESRTUCTIVE.
• They DO NOT make a TERRYFYING MANIFESTATIONS.
• They usually LIMIT them to a SOUND, a WORD , a particular
SMELL associated with them or LIMITED MOVEMENT of
OBJECTS.
• They LIMIT their INTERACTION with HUMANS to SIGNALLING
for HELP.
• They sometimes display the words “HELP ME”
• They ask for HELP to CORRECT a PARTICULAR WRONG.
• They do not ENGAGE in PROLONGED COMMUNICATION or
DIALOGUE.
• They do not ATTACK PEOPLE PHYSICALLY.
• They do not ATTACK RELIGIOUS or HOLY THINGS.
• They become completely STILL and SILENT when PRAYERS or
MASSES are OFFERED for them. 30
31. Teaching of the Catholic Church
CCC 1032
What is the first thing which we can do for Holy Souls in Purgatory?
The FIRST THING that we can do for them is the
EUCHARISTIC SACRIFICE(Mass).
31
32. Gregorian Mass
• It is a series of HOLY MASSES OFFERED for 30
CONSECUTIVE DAYS after a person’s DEATH.
• They are offered for an INDIVIDUAL SOUL.
• It is called GREGORIAN because of SAINT GREGORY THE
GREAT who was Pope from 590 to 604 AD.
• ST. GREGORY offered MASSES for 30 CONSECUTIVE DAYS
for the REPOSE SOUL of JUSTUS, a monk. AFTER 30 DAYS he
appeared to say that he had been DELIVERED FROM THE
FLAMES OF PURGATORY.
Doctor of the Church
He organized the Liturgical
Rites of the Catholic Church
which is still used today.
He was responsible for the
final arrangement of the
Gregorian Chant.
He was the one who
organized the
Universal Calendar of
Feasts.
32
33. What is a Stipend ?
• STIPEND is the MONEY given to the PRIEST for a MASS
INTENTION.
• It also means that the PERSON requesting for a MASS has
made a SACRIFICIAL OFFERING of his own.
• Luke 10:7- JESUS said, “Stay in that house eating and drinking,
whatever they gave you, for the WORKER DESERVES his
WAGES.
• 1 Cor 9:13 – Do you not know that those who work in the
Temple eat from what is offered in the Temple and those
SERVING at the ALTAR receive their SHARE of what is OFFERED
on the ALTAR.
• The OFFERING for EACH Mass intention is RM 10.
33
36. How we can help the Holy Souls in Purgatory?
• The greatest help is the OFFERING of HOLY MASSES.
• Next to it is RECITATION OF THE HOLY ROSARY, WAY OF THE
CROSS and ADORATION AT THE BLESSED SACRAMENT.
• ALMSGIVING : Tobit 12:9 Almsgiving preserves from DEATH and
it PURIFIES from all SIN.
• Any SACRIFICE we make, even the SMALLEST ONE, OFFERED
SPECIFICALLY for them have a GREAT VALUE in the EYES of GOD.
36
38. Sprinkling Holy Water on the graves
• SPRINKLE it on the GRAVES of your LOVED ONES and THOSE AROUND
THEM when visiting the cemetery.
• The SUFFERING SOULS also experience a GREAT ALLEVIATION when the
GRAVES are SPRINKLED with HOLY WATER.
• “O GOD, in thy MERCY MULTIPLY these DROPS into as MANY DROPS OF
HOLY WATER as there are HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY and allow them
• NOT TO FEAR THE PAINS IN PURGATORY, as long as the MOISTURE of
the HOLY WATER is PRESENT.
• May this HOLY WATER and THY PRECIOUS BLOOD CLEANSE THEM of
all THEIR SINS and DELIVER THEM FROM PURGATORY, O LORD. AMEN”
Prayer
38
39. Lighting Blessed Candles at the Cemetery
• The BURNING CANDLE is a sign of our prayer, a bright silent intercessor for the
Holy Souls.
• Blessed Candles are made of :
a) Pure wax – Symbolizes the PURE FLESH of CHRIST.(Received from Mother Mary)
b) Wick - Symbolizes the SOUL of CHRIST.
c) Flame - Symbolizes DIVINITY.
• (They have the effect of EXPELLING DEVILS and BRINGING BLESSINGS to the places
where they are lighted. (Use it at home)
39
42. What does the Period from November 1st to 8th represent?
• The Church grants PLENARY INDULGENCE for a POOR HOLY SOUL suffering in
PURGATORY when we visit OUR LOVED ONES and OTHERS during this PERIOD.
• According to CCC 1471 “An INDULGENCE is a REMISSION,
Before GOD of the TEMPORAL PUNISHMENT,
DUE to SINS whose GUILT has already been FORGIVEN,
• Which the FAITHFUL Christian who is duly disposed GAINS,
• Under prescribed conditions.
• A PARTIAL INDULGENCE removes PART of the TEMPORAL PUNISHMENT due to SINS.
• A PLENARY INDULGENCE removes ALL of the TEMPORAL PUNISHMENT.
• CONDITIONS
i) During the week you must go for CONFESSION.
ii) You must RECEIVE the EUCHARIST on the day you wish to RECEIVE
the INDULGENCE.
INDULGENCE
42
43. What is the basis used by the Catholic Church for “INDULGENCE”?
When a person sins he acquires certain LIABILITIES :
a) The LIABILITY of GUILT.
b) The LIABILITY of PUNISHMENT.
2 Samuel 12:13-14(This is after David commits ADULTERY)
a) Then DAVID said to NATHAN(Prophet).
b) ‘I have SINNED AGAINST the LORD’.
c) Then Nathan answered David.
d) The LORD on his part has FORGIVEN your SIN(GUILT); You shall NOT DIE.
e) However since you have dared to DESPISE the LORD by doing such a thing,
f) The CHILD that is BORN to you shall DIE.
Matthew 16:19 (JESUS said to PETER)
a) I will GIVE YOU the KEYS to the KINGDOM of HEAVEN.
a) Whatever you BIND on EARTH, would be BOUND in HEAVEN.
b) Whatever you LOOSE on EARTH would be LOOSED in HEAVEN.
43
45. What will the Holy Souls do for us ?
• There is NO UNGRATEFUL SOUL in HEAVEN.
• It is impossible to describe their UNBOUNDED GRATITUDE to those who HELP THEM.
• Filled with an IMMENSE DESIRE TO REPAY the favors done them, THEY PRAY FOR US with a
fervor so great, so intense, so constant that GOD REFUSES THEM NOTHING.
• The FIRST ACT OF A SOUL does when it is RELEASED FROM PURGATORY is to PROSTRATE
BEFORE THE THRONE OF GOD and PRAY UNCEASINGLY for those until they are SAFELY HOME IN
HEAVEN.
• By their PRAYERS, they SHIELD their friends from DANGERS, and PROTECT them from the EVILS
that threaten them.
• They will NEVER CEASE these PRAYERS until we are SAFELY HOME IN HEAVEN.
• They become your SINCEREST, DEAREST AND BEST FRIENDS for all ETERNITY.
45
47. Why Protestants do not believe in Purgatory ?
• They say that the word “PURGATORY is not in the BIBLE”.
• They say it is a CATHOLIC MADE UP DOCTRINE.
• One is SAVED by FAITH & SCRIPTURES ALONE - “SOLA FIDE’’ & “SOLA SCRIPTURA”.
• They DO NOT BELIEVE in TRADITIONS.
• JESUS by DYING on the CROSS was enough to be SAVED.(Get out of jail Free Card)
• JESUS said to the GOOD THIEF “Today you will be WITH ME in PARADISE”

Sola Fide Sola Scriptura
Saved by Faith Alone Saved by Scriptures Alone
BIBLE as the SOLE
AUTHORITY
Saved by Faith and not on
GOOD WORKS
51. Importance of GOOD WORKS
James 2:24
So you see, a person is SAVED by GOD,
THROUGH HIS WORKS,
And NOT by FAITH ALONE.
James 2:17
So by FAITH by itself, if it has NO WORKS is DEAD.
51
52. Importance of Traditions
2 Thessalonians 2:15
Because of that, brothers,
Stand FIRM and HOLD FAST,
To the TRADITIONS that we TAUGHT you,
By WORD or by LETTER.
52
53. What our Lady said about Holy Souls in Purgatory
She said that “It happens that GOD PERMITS them,
To MANIFEST themselves in DIFFERENT WAYS,
Close to their RELATIVES on EARTH,
In order to REMIND MEN,
Of the EXISTENCE of PURGATORY,
And to SOLICIT their PRAYERS,
To COME CLOSE to GOD,
Who is JUST, but GOOD”.
53
54. Saint Padre Pio and Holy Souls in Purgatory
• More SOULS of the DEAD from PURGATORY than the LIVING
climb this mountain to attend my MASSES and seek my
PRAYERS.
• POPE PIUS XII DIED in Castlegandolfo on October 9,1958. On
that day, SAINT PADRE PIO told a Friar, PIUS XII is in HEAVEN.
I SAW HIM during MASS.
• when someone asked saint padre pio, a comparison
between a fire on earth and the flames in purgatory.
He said
• they compare like fresh water and boiling water.
54
56. Jews believed in Final Purification after Death
• JEWS, CATHOLICS and EASTERN ORTHODOX have always HISTORICALLY
PROCLAIMED the reality of the FINAL PURIFICATION.
• The ORTHODOX JEWS, still repeat this PRAYER called the “MOURNERS KADDISH”
for 11 MONTHS, AFTER the DEATH of a LOVED ONE, they may be PURIFIED.
• The JEWS believed that the SOULS were PURIFIED AFTER DEATH, in PREPARATION for
their UNION with GOD.
• As the quotes below from the EARLY CHURCH FATHERS show, PURGATORY has been part
of the CHRISTIAN FAITH from the very BEGINNING.
• It was not until the PROTESTANT REFORMATION in the SIXTEENTH CENTURY that
anyone DENIED THIS DOCTRINE.
• 3 ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS of the doctrine: (1) that a PURIFICATION AFTER DEATH EXISTS,
(2) that it involves some kind of PAIN, and (3) that the purification can be ASSISTED by the
PRAYERS and OFFERINGS by the living to God. 56
60. Maria Simma – An Austrian Mystic
• She had VISITS from suffering HOLY SOULS in
PURGATORY.
• They will mainly ASK for HOLY MASSES for them to be
DELIVERED from PURGATORY.
• Thus, she began a lifetime APOSTOLATE for HELPING the
HOLY SOULS IN PURGATORY.
• The HOLY SOULS have told her that it is GOD in his GREAT
MERCY who gives PERMISSION to come to her to obtain
SACRIFICES and PRAYERS that their time in PURGATORY
may be LESSENED.
