2. The photograph acquires something of the dignity that it is missing
when it ceases to be a reproduction of reality
and show us things that no longer exist.
[Marcel Proust]
3. 1/ History
overlay: overlay two or more elements from two or more superimposed negative (Boiffard, Parry, Tabard)
François Tuefferd (1912-1996), Pèr'Lustucru
4. photo collage: photo composition cut, glued and assembled (Hugnet)
George Hugnet, Le rendez-vous, 1935
6. photogram : simple fingerprinting through the draw without a camera (Schad, ManRay, Moholy Nagy)
Man Ray, Rayographe, 1921
7. solarization: sunshine for a few seconds of a negative or photographic print during development, reversing part of
values (Man Ray,Tabard)
Maurice Tabard, Solarisation au masque Punuu, 1937
8. burning: it melts gradually the negative using a heat source. The gradual disintegration of the image gives
unexpected results (Ubac)
Raoul Ubac, La Nébuleuse, 1939
9. 2/ Back to the basics...
Light is the tap water (no light, no water, no bath!!)
Aperture is the tap size (the wiser it is, the highest the amount of water which fill the bath is)
Shutter speed is the time you let the tap open (short or long)
10. ...issue of each parameters when taking a photo:
- Aperture (for example: f1,4 to f22) is relative to the depth of field (DOF is the portion of a scene that appears
acceptably sharp in the image...)
Aperture: f 1,7 (shallow depth of field and sharp movement)
11. - Shutter speed (for example: from 30 seconds to 1/4000 second) is relative to blur or sharpen, a sport scene must
be taken with very high shutter speed not to be blur, otherwise:
Shutter speed: 1/2s, with the same ISO as before, the aperture has now to be more narrow to let enter less
light but for a longer time, the DOF becomes long
12. - ISO (for example: 100 to 3200) is link to the amount of noise in your picture, the higher the ISO is, the highest the
amount of noise is in your picture!!
ISO 100
13. - ISO (for example: 100 to 3200) is link to the amount of noise in your picture, the higher the ISO is, the highest the
amount of noise is in your picture!!
ISO 800
14. - ISO (for example: 100 to 3200) is link to the amount of noise in your picture, the higher the ISO is, the highest the
amount of noise is in your picture!!
ISO 1600
15. Aperture and shutter speed is a couple, with the same ISO when one of these increase, the other
decrease, and vice versa in order to let the same amount of light reach the sensor.
ISO: 100 - shutter: 1/2s - aperture: 14f
ISO: 100 - shutter: 1/160s - aperture: 1,7f
