• This baby report is one of 10 super category reports designed to show high-level
comparison and analysis for retail markets across major countries in Europe.
• This report contains data gathered from across Europe. The market was split into the
following categories: baby food, baby milk and drinks, nappies and baby toiletries.
• The report highlights key metrics, such as total sales figures, market trends, category
share, and winners and losers for Europe and for individual countries.
• The data has been sourced from IRI retail databases and Eurostat, the statistical branch of
administration for the European Commission.
• The countries included in the report are: France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain
and the United Kingdom (UK).
• The market channels used for each country in this report are as follows:

KEY TRENDS
• Most baby categories experienced
declining value sales in Q1 2014 across all
countries.
• In this quarter, the best performing baby
category in Europe was baby milk and
drinks. In the UK, Germany and the
Netherlands, this category’s sales were
boosted by exports to China and in the UK
growth was also due to increased prices
and the increased birthrate.
• The market remained challenging in
France, Italy and Spain. There have been
sharp declines in the baby food sector in
France. In modern trade channels in Italy
and in Spain, the nappies sector
experienced a real decline in value sales
due to a declining birthrate and the
economic crisis.

CATEGORY INSIGHTS
• The baby milk and drinks category was the best performer for the quarter, with a clear lead
over other baby categories. Sales increased by 18.3% for the quarter in Germany and by
3.3% in the UK compared to the previous year. Category growth was driven by several
factors, including exports to China, increased prices and an increased birthrate (in the UK).
• Nappies represented 40% of total baby care category sales. Yet, the market declined in all
countries with a sharp value decline in Italy, the Netherlands and Spain.
• Baby food struggled this quarter with a decline of -4.6% compared to the previous year. This
can be attributed to lower consumption and the ongoing trend of preparing more homemade
meals.
• Baby toiletries continued to decline with a -2.4% change compared to a year ago. This
category has been particularly affected in France, Italy and the UK.

KEY TRENDS
• The baby sector experienced value sales
declines of 4.4% across hypermarkets and
supermarkets; this sales decline is limited to
2.4% if we include the click and collect
channel.
• Overall, there was a slightly more positive
baby universe trend than the last quarter
(due to a better Q1 2014) at only -0.9%
across hypermarkets, supermarkets and click
and collect. Click and collect, which is not
included in the data collected for this report,
is a key driver for the baby universe.
• Hypermarkets and supermarkets still lost
business to the click and collect channel, but
at a slower rate than previously.
• Declines were sharpest in the baby food
sector (-7.8% value sales); yet baby milk and
drinks sales also fell (-5.8%).
• The good news is that, including click and
collect sales, nappies (0%) and toiletries (-
0.3%) remained stable after months of
decrease, as a result of a positive Q1 2014.

CATEGORY INSIGHTS
• Baby food was responsible for 46% of the losses experienced by the baby category overall
and baby milk was responsible for a further 27% of losses. In these categories, the leader
Bledina experienced a decrease in value sales by 8.4% and Nestlé saw a dip by 4% on all
segments.
• Pampers (Procter & Gamble) drove the nappies category’s stability through massive
promotional activity: more than 52% of the brand’s volumes were on promoted sales for the
first quarter.

KEY TRENDS
• Baby milk and drinks (with >30% share in
the baby market) grew in double-digit
figures. The baby milk category was the
main driver, benefitting from the continued
high demand from Chinese parents to import
high quality baby milk powder from
Germany. The major baby milk channels
were drugstores and hypermarkets.
However, the baby drinks category continued
to decline.
• The nappy category, the biggest sector in the
baby market, experienced a decline. It was
mainly due to losses in hypermarkets and
hard discounters (with a dip in sales for their
new range of premium nappies). Drugstores
grew positively, however it was not sufficient
to mask the losses.
• Baby food experienced positive development.
The growth was mainly from drugstores
followed by soft discounters.
• The baby toiletries category showed a slight
decline due to losses in hard discounters and
hypermarkets. Drugstores, however, showed
positive development.

CATEGORY INSIGHTS
• The baby milk and drinks category was the strongest performing category in the baby
market. Baby milk, especially the dry milk segment, was the main growth driver, with
double-digit value and volume growth. Huge Chinese demand for German baby milk powder
continued, as Chinese consumers do not trust their local products. Chinese people living in
Germany buy the products and send them to China in large quantities to resellers, leading
to out-of-stock situations on German shelves, especially with the renowned brands.
Drugstores remained the main point of sale, with dm drug market being the major store.
Hypermarkets were also an important channel attributing double digit value and volume
growth. The baby juices sector continued to decline. Private label held only 2.2% market
share of baby milk and drinks but has shown good growth.
• Growth in the baby food category was one of the drivers for the baby sector’s development
overall. Drugstores played an important role for pumping the sales growth. Soft discounters
also contributed to the positive development. A slight increase in price/volume benefited the
overall sales growth. Private label had presence only in drugstores and showed a declining
trend.
• The nappies category experienced a decline driven by losses in almost all the channels,
especially in hypermarkets and hard discounters. Hard discounters’ dip is attributed to a
decline in promotions in the premium nappy range that has been available since Q4 2012.
Drugstores, which is the major channel with about 60% value market share, showed a
moderate growth, yet was unable to offset the overall losses. Private label, which has
approximately 32% share, also declined this quarter, with a fall in promotions.
• For baby toiletries products, although the main point of sale was still drugstores, the growth
was not sufficient to mask the losses in hard discounters and hypermarkets. Market share
from discounters was in decline, despite the decrease in price/volume. Baby wipes were the
main growing segment. Private label held an immense market share of the baby toiletries
market and enjoyed stable growth.

KEY TRENDS
• In 2013, Italy reached the lowest historical
record of births. Less than 515 000 newborn
babies were registered, 12 000 less than the
other lowest record in 1995. Italian women
seem to be reluctant to have children in
these times: the average child per woman is
1.29 and always later in life (on average 31
years old when the first child arrives).
• Total baby care in Italy showed a 1.1%
decline in volume and dropped in value by
5.7% in Q1 2014.
• The negative volume trend was mainly
driven by strong sales declines in
hypermarkets (-8.4%) and supermarkets (-
3.8%), which respectively accounted for
28% and 49% of category sales.
• The main Italian retailers tried to push
private label products in these categories,
allowing more shelf space for these
products.

CATEGORY INSIGHTS
• In Q1 2014 discounters and traditional stores showed volume decrease, while drug
specialists saw a volume increase (+10.6%).
• The nappies segment followed the market trend: it mainly declined in modern trade channels
(hypermarket: -7.6%, supermarket and small self service: -1.1%). As in the previous
quarter, the leader (specialising in traditional nappies) showed a declining volume across
modern trade and focused on traditional stores and discounters with its top of the line
brands. The follower (specialising in the pull-ups segment) showed better performance in
modern trade as well, but drove growth by entering into the discounter channel.
• Baby toiletries’ positive trend was due to a stronger promotional effort in some key
segments, such as wipes and baby oil, but only in supermarkets. Toiletries, together with
baby food, were the most promoted categories in baby care in Italy (between 40 and 48% of
total volume are promoted sales). Baby toiletries’ sales in particular were also boosted by
female consumers, who are increasingly opting to buy baby care products instead of adult
products because of their milder features and their lower prices.

KEY TRENDS
• The nappy category is generally the
biggest sector for most countries, yet in
the Netherlands, the majority of value
sales came from milk and drinks. Milk and
drinks experienced enormous growth
numbers due to export to China.
• As a result of declining birth rates and the
trend to cook fresh food for babies, baby
food and baby products were under
pressure.
• Supermarkets had a share of 56.5% of
total baby sales, with an increase of 0.8%
due to milk which is now increasingly sold
through the supermarket channel.
• For the other baby categories, value share
declined slightly.
• Promotional pressure on nappies grew in
supermarkets (40% in Q1 versus 33% for
the same period last year), although the
result has not led to a higher share for the
channel.
• The promotion pressure in drugstores was
slightly lower for all categories.

CATEGORY INSIGHTS
• The baby milk and drinks category was the only category with positive development. Dry milk
products were heavily exported to China. This huge demand caused out of stocks in the
category. Supermarkets remained the main point of sale.
• The baby food category (excluding milk) declined in both value and volume. Self-made meals
negatively impacted baby food performance. Bio meals were still very small in this segment,
but it’s the only segment which showed positive growth numbers due to private label, Hipp
and the new brand Ella’s Kitchen.
• In the baby toiletries sector, baby wipes’ value and volume sales were negative for both the
supermarket and drugstore channel. In Q4, the volume sales of wipes were stable in
drugstores, but this quarter sales turned negative in this channel as well. Wipes are, like
nappies, being increasingly sold online (Bol.com/Wehkamp) and in the grey channels like
Action.
• Despite a higher promotional pressure on nappies (value any promotion 40% versus 33%
year ago) within the supermarket channel, both value as volume sales declined in Q1 versus
a year ago. In the drugstores channel, volume sales were stable, but value declined due to a
shift from Pampers to private label.

KEY TRENDS
• In Spain, the baby market declined -4.3%
in value sales versus a year ago. This
negative evolution was mainly due to the
nappies and milk and drinks segments.
• The negative trend came from birth rate
decreases, the power of private label in all
segments and the growing prevalence of
homemade meals.
• The driver channels were still
hypermarkets and big supermarkets, but
we observed the transfer of sales from
hypermarkets to big and small
supermarkets.
• Private label acquired share in the baby
market (+2.7 points versus year ago),
mainly due to success in food and nappies,
while in toiletries its share decreased.

CATEGORY INSIGHTS
• Nappies was the largest segment of Spain’s baby category, representing 55.2% of share - a
figure that is much higher than other countries. The sector experienced declines of -5.5% of
values sales, driven by a reduction in the birth rate and by the economic crisis. Prices
continued to rise and consumers opted for cheaper products and lower quality. This negative
evolution of Nappies was conditioned by declines of national manufacturers (-10.6% versus a
year ago), while private label grew 4% for this period. Private label has been a player in this
category for some time and represented 38.6% of total value sales (+3.5 points versus a year
ago).
• There was also a decline in the demand for baby milk and drinks, especially in hypermarkets
where private label has just appeared in stores. Indeed, the latest innovations (like milks for
babies with lactose intolerance and milks and drinks without egg or gluten) brought success to
national brands, but didn’t compensate for the potent growth of private label.
• Baby food experienced declines in both volume and value sales in Q1, mainly because of the
unfavourable evolution of porridge food. Private label captured 4.3 share points versus a year
ago reaching 13.9% of value sales. Despite the recent innovations of manufacturers, such as
new flavours in jarred food and the introduction of natural and ecological food, demand still
decreased.
• Value sales experienced declines, largely due to private label’s high share and strong growth
within the category.
• Drugstores in Spain that sell nappies and toiletries only presented 3.0% of value sales. The
main sales for the baby market have came from hypermarkets and supermarkets.

KEY TRENDS
• Q1 2014 saw a decline in all baby
categories except baby milk. A move
towards discounters outside IRI’s read is
believed to be partly responsible for the
drop that was recorded.
• Baby milk continued to see growth due to
price increases, the increased birth rate in
the UK and export sales to China as a
result of health scares. However, the
impact of export lessened, leading to a
slowdown in sales.

CATEGORY INSIGHTS
• The UK continued to see a baby boom, with birth rates at their highest level in 40 years.
• For baby milk, the impact of product exports to China lessened significantly with the market’s
growth decelerating. However, the market continued to grow, helped by inflation and a high
birth rate in the UK. Danone’s Aptamil and Cow & Gate (the benefactors of export volume
last year) started 2014 with some aggressive promotions on toddler and follow on life stages,
driving significant volume in order to maintain their market share, while SMA launched new
ergonomic packaging.
• Baby toiletries saw volume decline faster than value as average price increased. This was
driven by increases in promoted prices. Private label still saw growth in promotional volume.
• Baby wipes also experienced value sales decline, driven by private label and Procter &
Gamble. Private label decline was driven by price reductions, together with lower promotional
support. While base volume sales were up, this was not enough to grow the brand. Procter &
Gamble increased prices and base volume sales, but not enough to outweigh the decline in
promotional support.
• Nappies remained in value sales decline following the de-listing of the Huggies taped product.
Private label continued to win the majority of the lost volume, rather than Pampers. Most of
this volume was won off-shelf and at a lower price, supporting value sales declines.

Notes on category definitions for countries
Due to the diverse products found in individual countries across this market, it was necessary
to consolidate the available data into the categories in this report. In some cases it was not
possible to align products across all six countries, hence the need to highlight any anomalies in
the report. These exceptions are listed below:

• The France data in this report only contains baby milk, whereas the other countries also
include other baby drinks.

The best performing category in Europe was milk and drinks and interestingly the nappies category has struggled due to lower consumption and a declining birthrate in some countries, such as Spain. In the UK, Germany and the Netherlands, this category’s sales were boosted by exports to China and in the UK growth was also due to increased prices and the increased birthrate. • The market remained challenging in France, Italy and Spain. There have been sharp declines in the baby food sector in France. In modern trade channels in Italy and in Spain, the nappies sector experienced a real decline in value sales due to a declining birthrate and the economic crisis.
  • 6. PULSE REPORT Europe 6 CATEGORY INSIGHTS • The baby milk and drinks category was the best performer for the quarter, with a clear lead over other baby categories. Sales increased by 18.3% for the quarter in Germany and by 3.3% in the UK compared to the previous year. Category growth was driven by several factors, including exports to China, increased prices and an increased birthrate (in the UK). • Nappies represented 40% of total baby care category sales. Yet, the market declined in all countries with a sharp value decline in Italy, the Netherlands and Spain. • Baby food struggled this quarter with a decline of -4.6% compared to the previous year. This can be attributed to lower consumption and the ongoing trend of preparing more homemade meals. • Baby toiletries continued to decline with a -2.4% change compared to a year ago. This category has been particularly affected in France, Italy and the UK.   • 8. PULSE REPORT France 8 CATEGORY INSIGHTS • Baby food was responsible for 46% of the losses experienced by the baby category overall and baby milk was responsible for a further 27% of losses. In these categories, the leader Bledina experienced a decrease in value sales by 8.4% and Nestlé saw a dip by 4% on all segments. • Pampers (Procter & Gamble) drove the nappies category’s stability through massive promotional activity: more than 52% of the brand’s volumes were on promoted sales for the first quarter. The baby milk category was the main driver, benefitting from the continued high demand from Chinese parents to import high quality baby milk powder from Germany. The major baby milk channels were drugstores and hypermarkets. However, the baby drinks category continued to decline. • The nappy category, the biggest sector in the baby market, experienced a decline. It was mainly due to losses in hypermarkets and hard discounters (with a dip in sales for their new range of premium nappies). Drugstores grew positively, however it was not sufficient to mask the losses. • Baby food experienced positive development. The growth was mainly from drugstores followed by soft discounters. • The baby toiletries category showed a slight decline due to losses in hard discounters and hypermarkets.   • 10. PULSE REPORT CATEGORY INSIGHTS • The baby milk and drinks category was the strongest performing category in the baby market. Baby milk, especially the dry milk segment, was the main growth driver, with double-digit value and volume growth. Huge Chinese demand for German baby milk powder continued, as Chinese consumers do not trust their local products. Chinese people living in Germany buy the products and send them to China in large quantities to resellers, leading to out-of-stock situations on German shelves, especially with the renowned brands. Drugstores remained the main point of sale, with dm drug market being the major store. Hypermarkets were also an important channel attributing double digit value and volume growth. The baby juices sector continued to decline. Private label held only 2.2% market share of baby milk and drinks but has shown good growth. • Growth in the baby food category was one of the drivers for the baby sector’s development overall. Drugstores played an important role for pumping the sales growth. Soft discounters also contributed to the positive development. A slight increase in price/volume benefited the overall sales growth. Private label had presence only in drugstores and showed a declining trend. • The nappies category experienced a decline driven by losses in almost all the channels, especially in hypermarkets and hard discounters. Hard discounters’ dip is attributed to a decline in promotions in the premium nappy range that has been available since Q4 2012. Drugstores, which is the major channel with about 60% value market share, showed a moderate growth, yet was unable to offset the overall losses. Private label, which has approximately 32% share, also declined this quarter, with a fall in promotions. • For baby toiletries products, although the main point of sale was still drugstores, the growth was not sufficient to mask the losses in hard discounters and hypermarkets. Market share from discounters was in decline, despite the decrease in price/volume. Baby wipes were the main growing segment. Private label held an immense market share of the baby toiletries market and enjoyed stable growth. Less than 515 000 newborn babies were registered, 12 000 less than the other lowest record in 1995. PULSE REPORT Italy 12 CATEGORY INSIGHTS • In Q1 2014 discounters and traditional stores showed volume decrease, while drug specialists saw a volume increase (+10.6%). • The nappies segment followed the market trend: it mainly declined in modern trade channels (hypermarket: -7.6%, supermarket and small self service: -1.1%). As in the previous quarter, the leader (specialising in traditional nappies) showed a declining volume across modern trade and focused on traditional stores and discounters with its top of the line brands. The follower (specialising in the pull-ups segment) showed better performance in modern trade as well, but drove growth by entering into the discounter channel. • Baby toiletries’ positive trend was due to a stronger promotional effort in some key segments, such as wipes and baby oil, but only in supermarkets. Toiletries, together with baby food, were the most promoted categories in baby care in Italy (between 40 and 48% of total volume are promoted sales). Baby toiletries’ sales in particular were also boosted by female consumers, who are increasingly opting to buy baby care products instead of adult products because of their milder features and their lower prices.   • 14. PULSE REPORT The Netherlands 14 CATEGORY INSIGHTS • The baby milk and drinks category was the only category with positive development. Dry milk products were heavily exported to China. This huge demand caused out of stocks in the category. Supermarkets remained the main point of sale. • The baby food category (excluding milk) declined in both value and volume. Self-made meals negatively impacted baby food performance. Bio meals were still very small in this segment, but it’s the only segment which showed positive growth numbers due to private label, Hipp and the new brand Ella’s Kitchen. • In the baby toiletries sector, baby wipes’ value and volume sales were negative for both the supermarket and drugstore channel. In Q4, the volume sales of wipes were stable in drugstores, but this quarter sales turned negative in this channel as well. Wipes are, like nappies, being increasingly sold online (Bol.com/Wehkamp) and in the grey channels like Action. • Despite a higher promotional pressure on nappies (value any promotion 40% versus 33% year ago) within the supermarket channel, both value as volume sales declined in Q1 versus a year ago. In the drugstores channel, volume sales were stable, but value declined due to a shift from Pampers to private label.   • 16. PULSE REPORT Spain 16 CATEGORY INSIGHTS • Nappies was the largest segment of Spain’s baby category, representing 55.2% of share - a figure that is much higher than other countries. The sector experienced declines of -5.5% of values sales, driven by a reduction in the birth rate and by the economic crisis. Prices continued to rise and consumers opted for cheaper products and lower quality. This negative evolution of Nappies was conditioned by declines of national manufacturers (-10.6% versus a year ago), while private label grew 4% for this period. Private label has been a player in this category for some time and represented 38.6% of total value sales (+3.5 points versus a year ago). • There was also a decline in the demand for baby milk and drinks, especially in hypermarkets where private label has just appeared in stores. Indeed, the latest innovations (like milks for babies with lactose intolerance and milks and drinks without egg or gluten) brought success to national brands, but didn’t compensate for the potent growth of private label. • Baby food experienced declines in both volume and value sales in Q1, mainly because of the unfavourable evolution of porridge food. Private label captured 4.3 share points versus a year ago reaching 13.9% of value sales. Despite the recent innovations of manufacturers, such as new flavours in jarred food and the introduction of natural and ecological food, demand still decreased. • Value sales experienced declines, largely due to private label’s high share and strong growth within the category. • Drugstores in Spain that sell nappies and toiletries only presented 3.0% of value sales. The main sales for the baby market have came from hypermarkets and supermarkets. PULSE REPORT The United Kingdom 18 CATEGORY INSIGHTS • The UK continued to see a baby boom, with birth rates at their highest level in 40 years. • For baby milk, the impact of product exports to China lessened significantly with the market’s growth decelerating. However, the market continued to grow, helped by inflation and a high birth rate in the UK. Danone’s Aptamil and Cow & Gate (the benefactors of export volume last year) started 2014 with some aggressive promotions on toddler and follow on life stages, driving significant volume in order to maintain their market share, while SMA launched new ergonomic packaging. • Baby toiletries saw volume decline faster than value as average price increased. This was driven by increases in promoted prices. Private label still saw growth in promotional volume. • Baby wipes also experienced value sales decline, driven by private label and Procter & Gamble. Private label decline was driven by price reductions, together with lower promotional support. While base volume sales were up, this was not enough to grow the brand. Procter & Gamble increased prices and base volume sales, but not enough to outweigh the decline in promotional support. • Nappies remained in value sales decline following the de-listing of the Huggies taped product. Private label continued to win the majority of the lost volume, rather than Pampers. Most of this volume was won off-shelf and at a lower price, supporting value sales declines.
