2. Exposition There is no setting, the play immediately starts off with the monolouge, but as you continue reading on the first page you find that he is in his car. The character is telling the story in one large monologue. The major characters are the son, the sister, the father Earl, and the mother Jan. The Protagonist in this story would be the son. He has no name. Throughout the entire play you are reading one long monologue describing his life, his experiences, and living through his pain while he is trying to find hope somehow. The Inciting Incident would be when the son is driving around about to go to his favorite thinking spot, right before he kills his sister.
3. Inciting Incident When you first begin reading this monologue you are with the character about to go to his favorite spot. He mentions that he killed his sister but he goes into deep detail about what happened and how it happened.
4. Conflict The son is the protagonist of this play. He decapitated his sister when he by accidently ran her over, and because of that his life was turned upside down. His mother went crazy, and his father was never able to forgive him. When his 9 year old sister died their entire family died. The son couldn’t fight his pain and the family went their separate ways
5. Climax After leaving the hospital the son decides to leave to New York City and start a new life for himself. He gets a job, and explored himself and becomes a writer. He comes across a redheaded women who he really tried to start a relationship with but his pain is too strong, its blocking him from truly being happy .There is really nothing in his life to make things better because he has no family and no joy.
6. Rising Action and Denouement The son receives a letter from his father many years later stating that he has cancer, and does not have much longer to live. He sent him 200 dollars and asked him to come and see him for one last time. After 15 long years they meet up for the first time since the horrible incident that tore their family apart. The son was never able to forgive his father after he stuck a gun into his mouth, but on his death bed they were both able to forgive each other and move on from what had happened to them. The father left his song with 4,000 dollars and the Steinway piano that meant so much to him.
7. Analyzing the son Reading this monologue about a failed life of a 17 year old boy who killed his sister you see the real pain he dealt with. His father hated him, and his mother went insane. He wasn't able to open himself up to love, and when he met up with his father for the firs time in 15 years I believe it was the first time in his life since the horrible accident that he was just able to be free. I think you could compare the protagonist to a piano. As you go up and down on the piano the notes get higher and lower. The darker sounds and higher sounds of the notes signify the emotional rollercoaster the son lived on.
