This document provides information about imports and trade of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into the EU28. It summarizes import volumes and sources for PET into the EU28 in 2016, with a focus on Italy as the largest importer. Main exporting countries to the EU28 in 2016 were India, Thailand, Turkey, and Indonesia. The document also summarizes PET exports from producing countries within the EU28 to other EU28 countries in 2016, with the largest exporters being Belgium, Germany, Lithuania, and the Netherlands.

CN Code: 39076020 (up to Dec 2016)
PET in primary form having a VN ≥ 78 ml/g
4. Introduction
In this first section of the presentation, you are going to
get a brief overview on polyethylene terephthalate
(PET) bottle grade imports in EU28, with particular
emphasis on Italy, which, as you will see, represents
the strongest importer among European Member
States.
Main source of the data is Eurostat Comext database.
14. 2016 Nov YTD
CN Code: 39076020
PET in primary form having a VN ≥ 78 ml/g
15. Introduction
In this second part of the presentation, you are going to get an
overview on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle grade
exported from the EU Countries with an active PET
production into the rest of EU28 Member States.
Since UK does not report any export data, in order to make the
analysis consistent, just for this specific Country, declared
imports from UK, by the rest of the EU Member States, have
been taken into account.
Source of the data is Eurostat Comext database. Period: 2016
Nov YTD – For Lithuania and UK provisional December data
included.
Differently from 2015, no pre-buying activity from outside EU28 was noted in December
2016 Average import CIF Price in Europe was 834 €/ton
Italy had the “lion share” insofar as imported volume from outside EU28 is concerned. Indeed, imports into Italy accounted for ca. 58% of the total PET domestic demand in 2016.
Despite of the Countervailing Duties, imposed on the majority of the Indian PET producers, significantly volume originating from India was sold into EU28
This slide makes evident that Indian producers born the burden of Countervailing duties on their own shoulders in order to maintain price competitiveness. Remark: S. Korea, Turkey and India have no duty.
Import CIF price in Italy was 14 €/ton less than the average import CIF price in EU28 (see slide n° 7)
This volume is higher than the declared nameplate capacity in the Country (see slide n° 16)
