Numerology – An Introduction
What is Numerology and is it truly valid and meaningful?
Numerology is the study of the deeper spiritual and occult meanings of numbers.
Numbers are mentioned in the Kabbalah, the Bible and other holy books and have
always had cultural significance throughout much of history. Various forms of the
practice have been around for thousands of years. Some estimates have the practice
dated as far back as 10,000 years.
Western numerology as we study it today has its roots in Greece. Pythagoras, a greek
mathematician and philosopher, (569-470BC) was the founding father of what
developed into modern numerology. He combined mathematical disciplines of many
cultures to form Pythagorian numerology, a practice that continues to evolve even today.
The Pythagoreans discovered a great deal about mathematics and geometry as we
know it, but they also described numbers using non-numerical characteristics. For
example, odd numbers were considered masculine and even numbers feminine.
Pythagoreans believed that all things could be broken down into numbers and that “all is
number”, meaning everything in the world can be described in terms of numbers and
proportions and that all numbers can be broken down and reduced to a single numeric
value.
Pythagorean numerology has influenced many secret societies, including the
Rosicrucians and Masons.
All that is needed to do numerology is the full name and date of birth. Each of the letters
of your name correspond to a number. The sum of the numbers of the name and date
of birth are reduced to a single digit or a two digit master number. The numbers tell a
great deal about the person, their motivations, talents, life challenges, and soul purpose.
In numerology, every individual number represents different levels of human experience
and understanding. The digits 1 – 9 and master numbers 11, 22, 33 all embody
different vibrations and life lessons.
The numbers can be thought of as lessons to be learned and things to assimilate and
grow through. All of the numbers have both positive and negative traits based on
experience and understanding. Therefore, looking at your numbers can help you learn
how to embrace your strengths while managing and working through challenges.
Spiritual Significance of Numbers
Throughout history many cultures have placed significant spiritual meanings and
3. symbolism on numbers. Numerology has been used extensively by nearly all religions.
The number 40 is a good example. In the Bible, 40 represents wholeness. Moses'
Sinai sojourn and Jesus' time in the wilderness each lasted 40 days. In the story of
Noah's ark and the great flood, it rained continuously for 40 days and nights. The reigns
of David and Solomon were both 40 years and the Jews spent 40 years in the
wilderness. This is a small sampling. The number 40 is actually used 146 times
throughout the Bible. As you can see, rather than being literal, 40 is symbolic and it is
the underlying meaning, more than the number itself that is important to the stories.
In addition to holy books, numbers have also found themselves to be prominent in
superstition. The number thirteen is widely feared in several countries. You've likely
heard of the fears surrounding Friday the 13th
. In fact, it's such an ingrained superstition
that horror movies were made about it.
Thirteen is considered so unlucky that many buildings “skip” the 13th
floor. It's common
to see elevators without the number 13. So why is it that a number can strike panic into
the masses? There are many theories as to why 13 may have come to be considered
unlucky, but no definitive answer. Isn't it interesting how many people have been afraid
of this number for centuries and yet no one can pinpoint a definitive reason? All the
theories are mere speculation.
Whether you are a believer or a skeptic, the truth is numbers are everywhere and they
form patterns in every part of life. Even those who don't believe numbers to have any
mystical or magical meanings can still find something interesting in Numerology.
In the next sections we'll look at the general characteristics of numbers and how to use
Pythagorean numerology to determine your personal numbers derived from your name
and date of birth. Perhaps you'll learn a bit about yourself that you hadn't considered
before?
4. Basic Number Meanings
In numerology the single digits 1 – 9 as well as the master numbers 11, 22, and 33 are
all considered. Master numbers are the only numbers that are not reduced down to a
single digit. The Master numbers represent a higher level of potential, wisdom and
understanding than the singles.
Every number has a general vibration to it, basic concepts that shape its characteristics.
Learning the basic meanings of numbers is a great start to better understanding
numerology and also learning the messages hidden in repeat number patters like 11:11,
444 and other patterns many people see. More on those later, but first lets cover some
of the basic elements of the numbers.
Every number has both positive and negative characteristics and the key lies in finding
the right balance that leads you to develop the positive traits while helping you grow
through the less desirable ones.
The Number 1
One is the number of singularity and individualism. It is the process of developing
independence and a strong sense of self. The number one speaks of initiative, drive

pioneering spirit, those with innovative ideas and strong leadership abilities.
The negative traits of the number one are aggressiveness, impulsive behavior,

narcissism and blame others for their shortcomings rather than taking responsibility.
The Number 2

individual blends with others. Two is the number of harmony, teamwork, becoming a
part of a whole. It deals with group dynamics of all types: family, friends, business
